I rememer seeing photos of Halifax airport (Canada) where many transatlantic flights were diverted that day in Airliner World magazine. They had to park planes on the runway nose to tail. A very sad day.

I noticed in the link provided....in the 3rd pic from the top...if you look closely, you can see the hangar on the left. Bunch of US Airways aircraft. Is it me or do I see 2 (red colored fuselage) Metrojet 737s there? I thought Metrojet was long gone before 9/11.... Anyone can confirm this for me?

Even the very bottom pic at the hangar has the same planes. Looks to me like Metrojet.

Look at the last one on the bottom with all the cop cars outside the terminal.

Ok but are those Metrojet aircraft or what? Its hard to tell but I do see the US Airways logos on the tail though.

I count 12 cop cars a the terminal on the bottom pic. Good find, Neilalp!

I just wonder if there are any pics of planes doing an inbound landing right after US airspace was shut down.

what amazes me is that 3 years later, new photos and new videos surface....where were these 1 or 2 years ago?

I think you're confusing Metrojet with Midway Mk.2, who shutdown (the first of three times) on 9/12/01, only to restart after getting the $$$ from the Feds that every airline got in compensation for the shutdown of the skies.

As for Metrojet, it was phased out in the last few months of 2001 as a direct result of the downturn in air travel post-9/11.

Sad, sad day.

What may even be more sad is that this very scene could soon be repeated, only the setting being various desert airports in California.

I find it amazing that these are the only two pics of Halifax on 9/11 on the A.Net database.

AirframeAS,

I am almost sure that those redtails you see are Northwest DC-9's. The shape and the color of the tails look just like Northwest DC-9's if you look real close.

I see what you are talking about. You are right the Metrojets are on the third picture down. I was looking at the fourth one down. I am sorry.

muttley~ maybe i've misunderstood also, but i think what he was referring to is having a whole lot of jets parked nose to nose in the desert waiting for the chopping block.

And I was @ CLT the day everything happened. VERY odd experiance...

You know, these are probably the only pictures in the world that can still move me so long after being taken. Its amazing how that one event changed the entire world forever. It still astounds me to see all those aircraft diverted to the different locations. Wow.

Cheers

Another attack like those on 9/11 (or even a shoot down of airliners by terrorists using shoulder launched SAMs) will drive some airlines out of business, and their a/c will be flown out to the desert to be stored, awaiting new owners and a return to service.

According to Michael Moore and Farenheit 9/11, it would only occur when some gonverning body wants it to occur. Another attack similar to those horrific ones on 9/11 (or even a shoot down of airliners by terrorists using shoulder launched SAMs) would without a doubt drive many airlines out of business, furthermore it would change the business in more ways than one.

Muttley35, et al:

The majority of the planes in those photos were USAirways jets at CLT. Given the financial situation of USAirways (as well as United and Delta), it's quite possible that these planes could find themselves parked and wrapped in the desert if the airline were to undergo some massive restructuring or even complete liquidation.

Hopefully we won't see the latter happen.

Also, reverting to Michael Moore's rhetoric is foolish and ignorant.

Cheers.

The picture I remember is on this website somewhere.

It's just a picture of the PTV in the back of someone's seat, and shows their track from the Netherlands I believe, and their course as they turned back around after the attacks.

For some reason, that one always seemed the most powerful.
