I am sad to see a DC-10 leave JFK for a while, or for good, but with all the Ghana and Ethiopian rumors going around, I cannot say that I am surprised.

This definitely does not surprise me however it does make me sad... I was lucky enough to fly roundtrip JFK-ACC last month on GH for a summer study abroad program at the University of Ghana... Our trip originally planned for us to fly on KLM but was changed last minute simply due to the bargain airfare that GH offered... I can say that I was very happy for the rare opportunity to ride on a DC-10 but at the same time information such as this makes me wonder... I'm glad I took my safety card

This is a clear msg to GHANA AIRWAYS and to its govt to get its airline's act together and immediately think of a fleet revamp program ASAP.
The best bet would be buying or leasing in used MD 11s to replace DC 10s or used B 767-300ERs or A 330-200s. These acft have the capability to fly from ACC to the US East Coast nonstop which is badly needed and that too in a cost efficient manner.
With Ethiopian now deciding on making ACCRA its WEST AFRICAN hub for flights to US and other regional African cities...Ghana Airways is gonna have a v tough time competing with them and EK + the big Euro airlines serving EU-Middle East and USA via EU from its Accra base.

I have said this previously and I will repeat, turning around Ghana Airways or any other mismanaged and corrupted African airline does not only involve introducing 'modern' aircraft, like replacing their DC-10 with an MD-11.
What Ghana Airways needs is to bring in a consultant, help them sort their overstaffing, poor customer service, fleet structure, flight frequencies, onboard service, alliances, etc.

This is unfortunate as this further reduces the number of flights availible connecting the United States with Africa.
I think this leaves only Royal Air Morrocco, Egyptair and South African Airways...
However it's entirely Ghana Airways fault for gross safety violations and general failure to operate in an manner compliant with US law. Similiar to AeroContinente in a sense...

''Almost 200 passengers booked on a Ghana Airways flight were stranded at a Maryland hotel Tuesday night.
The Department of Transportation is refusing to let the plane take off from Baltimore-Washington International Airport, and the passengers' anger and frustration have reached the boiling point.
"Nobody cares," said passenger Wilhemina Amnenyor. "They don't care. It's frustrating. We don't know what to do."
The passengers have been stranded since Monday. Federal investigators say the plane is not safe and the airline allowed its license to expire.
"We find it very demeaning to be put in this position," said passenger James Logan. "I have no change of clothes because my luggage is already checked in."
The DOT says recent actions have raised serious questions regarding safety and licensing, which must be answered before the airline will be allowed to resume service.
A representative for the airline said the plane was safe.
"What's wrong with the plane? There's nothing wrong with the plane," said Collins Fosu. "There is absolutely nothing wrong with the original plane."
DOT officials are hoping to make a decision Wednesday regarding the flight to Ghana''

"Ghana's state-run airline was barred by U.S. officials Tuesday from flying into and out of the United States during an investigation of allegations it ignored orders to ground unsafe aircraft and flew on an expired license.
The decision to suspend the airline and the circumstances that led to it are very rare, possibly unprecedented, said Robert Johnson, a Transportation Department spokesman. "We're making a decision that we believe is the first of its kind."
In two instances, Ghana Airways used an aircraft that had been ordered grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration because of safety concerns, the department said. The roundtrip flights between Ghana and New York and Ghana and Baltimore took place on July 24 and 26, Johnson said.
The airline also allowed its operating license to expire earlier this month but continued unauthorized direct flights since that time, the agency said.
"Ghana Airways' recent actions have raised serious questions regarding safety and licensing, which must be answered before the airline will be allowed to resume service to and from the United States," the department announcement said.
Ghana Airways was not immediately reachable for comment.
Ghana Airways directly links all of West Africa to the United States.
The order was effective immediately. A flight scheduled to leave Accra, Ghana, for New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport around 7 p.m. EDT Tuesday was canceled.
The airline operates two roundtrip flights per week between Accra and New York and two roundtrips per week between Accra and Baltimore Washington International Airport.
Passengers have already been affected by the ban.
A direct round trip flight scheduled to leave Ghana's capital Accra to New York's JFK airport on Tuesday at 2330 GMT was cancelled.
According to Ghana Airways' website, the flights are to be rescheduled."

hmmm... Interesting if not a shame. I know that at least one of their DC10s is banned from flying into the UK. Probably the aircraft mentioned in this article? Wonder if they've tried bringing it into the UK....

It's crazy how the local news on TV in Baltimore reported so little of what the real reason for Ghana's grounding. Their website gives a little more information. But if they checked with Airliners.net first, the TV news would have had the whole story!

BTW...I saw this DC-10 on final approach the other day while driving on Route 70 outside of Columbia, MD.

I sure am glad I got to photograph one of their DC-10s -- for the first time -- at JFK recently! Just goes to show you that you never know how/when your photos will taken on new significance to yourself and/or others.

Ghana Airways and Nigeria Airways are sailing in the same boat...Nigeria Airw though has sunk many times which isnt the same for Ghana Airw but from this incident it seems like it will slowly.
Just like what EK did to help make UL a 4.5 Star airline that it is today...some big shot tough airline should take control of Ghana Airways.
UL werent a great airline one bit until Emirates bought a 44% stake in it in 1997-98 which really helped elevate its image all round Asia and Europe-UK.

Hey ETStar, I guess a 763 can in fact fly ACC-JFK and ACC-BWI nonstop at full capacity without weight restrictions, because Ghana Airways wants, or wanted, 767s as replacements for their DC-10 aircraft. But seeing how poorly Ghana Airways is managed, they may have been going for an airplane that couldn't give them what they need. So perhaps I haven't even answered your question!

Ghana Airways wishes to inform the general public that due to the suspension of its operations to the USA, flights will not operate as originally scheduled. To safeguard the interest of our passengers Ghana Airways is making all efforts to airlift them with the least inconvenience.
Meanwhile Ghana Airways is working with the DOT and FAA to resolve all allegations and resume normal operations as soon as possible.
All passengers are requested to contact Ghana Airways on the following numbers for regular updates:
Please be assured of our earnest desire to serve you. We regret all the stress and inconvenience and hope that regular service will resume soon.

27 Soups: appently according to the independent newspaper published today (in Ghana) GH is NOT banned from flying to the USA the USA has banned one a/c (9G-AND)
28 Mainland: Soups, The leasing company is called BCI leasing and it seems they may own both of Ghana's DC-10's: http://www.mojavebooks.com/mhv/031030-1.html
29 ETStar: Is this the aircraft they relatively recently got from the Mojave? Also, GH is in effect not allowed to fly into the US since its license has expired,
30 Mainland: Yes, this aircraft 9G-AND, as well as 9G-ANE were the old HA DC-10s taken out of Mohave. The first to be ferried out, 9G-AND, remained all white while
