At present, there are no 70 seaters at Northwest for anyone to fly. Doubt that the NW pilots would be willing to drop down to American Eagle levels to fly this size aircraft. Don/t hold your breath for the arrival of these aircraft!!!

AIR757200 I asked that same question when this same story came out more detailed in another paper several days earlier. Then reply was that they would be NW cockpit crew and link F/A and handled by link on the ground. At any rate you can be assured that would be what NW wants.

Don't be surprised to see the same type of concession from Delta pilots. Since DL is limited in the number of 70 seaters due to scope clauses, it wouldn't surprise me.

Hell, who do you think is flying the new EMBs for US? It's a trend.

I think that it is a great idea for the 70 seaters to be flown by mainline. It's pretty bad now with a lot of the carriers when you buy a ticket you aren't even flying that airline.

YOu all are missing the point... which isn't surprising given the misleading article that spawned this thread.

The NWA pilots are the ones that want this, since it is already in their current contract. It's just enforcing their own job protection. They also recognize that it can't happen at current pay rates, so they're proposing essentially a "B" scale rate for the proposed 70 seat jets. What this mean is a competive rate of pay with respect to other 70 seat operators (Mesaba, ASA, Comair, Eagle etc...). It would initially be staffed with furloughed NWA pilots and would be mainline a/c on the NWA certificate, therefore flying as Northwest Airlines. Nowhere in the proposal does it say Airlink rampers, agents and FAs would be used. There would be 401K matching, but no pension until you progressed back into the "A" scale equipment (Dc9 , airbus etc...) and while no details were given, I'm sure some work rule enhancements would be apart of the deal.

If the rates can be competitive enough for the NWA pilots to pull this off, I don't see how NWA mgmt wouldn't go for the deal. I wouldnt be surprised if this actually happend. Unfortunately, I think this would spell the end of the avros once the contract is up in 2007. One other thing, the proposal also includes provisions for Mesaba and Pinnacle pilots to "flow up" into mainline, thus securing career progression for the Airlink pilots.

The biggest question is what type of a/c is NWA interested in? IMO, the EMB series would be the best fit. Start with the 170 and as the DC9s retire the EMB190/195 can complement their little brothers. This secures NWA with a mainline fleet of narrowbody a/c in the 70-224 categories to further right size their markets and match capasity to demand.

By the way, the title of the thread is awful. It leads people to believe that pay cuts will afford them the right to fly 70 seat a/c. That is 100% incorrect. Why? THEY ALREADY HAVE THE RIGHT TO FLY 70 SEAT AC! In fact, NWA pilots own the right to fly all a/c with 55 seats or more. Except the avros that were grandfathered into their current contract signed in 1998 that can only be flown by Mesaba with Mesaba pilots.

AZJ makes sense in saying they should prob use EMB170/190 series as they would be more common between them than the CRJ-700/ new 100seater which would prob require 2 type ratings and will be a while before its available.

I flew on the EMB170 the other day for fun and that was a nice little airplane, not as roomy as the Avro but more so than the CRJ-700 imo.

The seat thing was explained to me that NW pilots could fly anything that was was assigned to them BUT Mesaba pilots could NOT fly anything with OVER 69 seats. A NW cockpit crew explained that to me over a cup of coffee at a hotel layover one evening.

Don't expect Bombardier to go quietly into the night. This would be a perfect place to offer the CR7s initially and a launching pad for the proposed new C-series down the line. It will be a buyers market as those two guys fall over themselves trying to offer incentives.

NW buying the CRJ-700 for "mainline" would be the same thing as what AC did when they bought their CRJ's.

So can we expect an order from NW for (___) CRJ-700's this year???

I think Furloughed pilots would much rather fly a 70-90 seater for a lower pay rate than they were pre 9-11 than they would staying on furlough
