Real Truth For The 717 And 737?

Newest issue of Airways talks about AirTran. Typical of my nitpicky self, I notice a couple of interesting, and contradictory, statements.

First, the article talks about how AirTran (in the generic, no one quoted) loves the 717, and feels that the real reason for failure was Boeing's lack of desire to sell it over the 737 when they acquired MDD.

Yet later in the article Leonard is quoted directly saying that the block-hour costs on the 737-700 are lower than the 717, even though it has 20 additional seats! If *I* were using that as a metric, I'd say the 717 wasn't very good at all!

I think it's called "airline math" where, if

a + b = c
c - b doesn't equal a

It's called trying to justify a previous decision so you don't look bad to your stock holders......
