What airlines around the world operate the B737-900? I know KLM, Continental and Korean do. Is the B737-900 being considered by any other airlines?

AS is currently operating the 739. The tail numbers starts with a 3. The first one was N302AS.

Just in case you care. AS Currently has 12 739s in their fleet.

N302AS, N303AS, N305AS, N306AS, N307AS, N309AS, N315AS, N317AS, N318AS, N319AS, N320AS, N323AS.

Next on the list for them is 737-800s with winglets.  Big thumbs up

The 737-900 is an interesting aircraft in many respects, with the same maximum capacity as a 707 (albeit without the 707-320B/420's 6,000 mile range), and roughly the same length.

Though the passenger capacity limit on the 737-900 is the same as on the 737-800, you can accomodate more passengers on the 737-900 in a two class layout than on the -800, which is of course the type's raison d'etre. This also makes it somewhat unique in that it renders the type generally very attractive to network carriers like Alaska, Continental and KLM and also renders it very unattractive to LCCs like Ryanair, who would want fill it with the maximum number of seats in a 1-class configuration, and hence go for the 737-800 instead.

All in all a very interesting aircraft...I'm suprised AA didn't order any, given their large 737-800 fleet...

Now that AM is in the process of slowly replacing its extensive MD-8x fleet with 737NG's, there is a lot of speculation that they are looking at the 739, especially because the 752 fleet is also being replaced (while some 57's will be replaced by 767ER's, some need to be replaced by narrowbodies).

Currently AM has 15? (someone please confirm the number) 737-700's with blended winglets, but more -700's and -800's will arrive (and theoretically -600's and -900's as well). If I understand correctly, Boeing is supposed to be working on a longer-range variant of the 739 and AM has been mentioned in this forum repeatedly as the "launch" customer of the version (that would be a more suitable replacement of the 752 than the standard 739).



Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Engines, basically. The JT8D was (and remains) a great powerplant, but the revised wing mountings and CFM56 family offer greater thrust and better economy. The CFM also had the potential to grow which meant stretches were viable.

Of course when you revise the wings, stretch the body and add more power it means more fuel can be carried so the 737 range was increased on some models. The 733 onwards were basically 'grown-up' versions of the 737.

With the 757 series going out of production, the 739 is now Boeing's largest narrow body airliner. While the 739 is not as versatile and has less range than a 757, it is lighter will lower operating costs.....however, the 739 can certainly operate most routes that are generally flown by the 757. I would expect there will be increased interest in the 739 in the coming years as passenger numbers increase. The 739 would be a very practical choice for any airline that now operates any member of the 737NG to add a higher-capacity airliner.

With all of the "excitement" at Boeing focused on the 7e7, a possible 747 update and the new 777 models (-200LR and -300ER), little has been said about the proposed 737-900X (or -900ER)....which would give the 739 more range and allow it to operate US transcon flights with little or no weight restrictions. The 739 was a simple strech of the 738, meaning that the 739 traded some range for its increased size and capacity. It was long speculated that Alaska would be the launch customer for this new type, but nothing thus far has materialized and AS recently swapped a couple of 739 orders for 738s (it is likely that the AS 738s will be dedicated to their SEA-Florida routes).......it was also rumored that the 739X would deal with the emergency exit issue which would allow increased seating on the type when configured in a high density seating arrangment. The 739X, with increased range and seating, would be very attractive to European charter carriers which operate the 737NG, carriers such as Air Berlin, Hapag-Lloyd and Transavia.

The 739 is a magnificent airliner... Ending the 57 line, and marketing the 739 line was smart on boeing's part. Therefore, there is commonality in one family. Where as when the 757 flew, it offered that capacity, but without the commonality. With the 737-6/7/8 & 757-200 Vs. The Airbus A318/19/20/21 airbus wins that commonality, Boeing was smart to replace that 752 Place with a 737 (the 900) despite they did want to continue marketing the 752 for obvious reasons.

Every bit as attractive as the A321 and more so. An aircraft of similar capacity but longer range would be just what the European IT operators would drool over, those Tenerife and African destinations being operable without penalties.

Being able to fly from Scandinavia to the Canaries with a full load plus some cargo...a charter operators wet dream at 737 economics!

I think Ryan air does, but I'm not sure. The 739 is one long aircraft, good competitor for the A321.

FR will soon have to get 737-700s after they start offering seats on the wings and start selling space in the overhead bins. Pretty soon, the lavatories will go at half price.
