Saturday Only Service

I just read that US is going to be increasing its service between CLT and St. Thomas from one Saturday only flight to two Saturday only flights. It made me wonder why they would do this rather than add service on another day of the week. It also begs the question as to why airlines do this Saturday only service to some leisure destinations. I see the logic here, that leisure travellers will likely be staying for a week, but what about for people taking an extended weekend (as I often do)?

It just strikes me as a bit odd that airlines offer some routes on a Saturday only basis, really limiting the traveller's options.

US currently offers daily CLT-STT service.

They are adding a second roundtrip on Saturdays, for a total of 8 weekly flights.

I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

Saturday-only service usually means saturday-only NONSTOP service. Example is CO running saturday-only nonstops CLE-CUN, CLE-SJU (seasonally, it's daily), and seasonal CLE-NAS nonstops. Travelers can still return on other days through either EWR or IAH, but the saturday-only service is to take advantage of the high number of vacationers who will Monday thru Friday, and have to wait till Saturday to go on vacation.

Because it's a great way for airlines to increase aircraft utilization on Saturdays. Typically, schedules to the big business destinations (BOS, LGA, DCA, ATL, etc.) are reduced on Saturdays because of fewer business travelers. So, instead of having an A319 or a 757 sit around all day in CLT or PHL on Saturday, send it to the Caribbean and actually make some money off it. This also happens on Sundays too, although to a lesser extent.

N670UW,

Excellent point! I hadn't even thought about all of the times that I see "X6" in the schedules. It makes sense to keep the planes in the air generating revenue rather than sitting on the apron.

Also a good amount of these flights operate during the high season when the demand is there and the flights fill themselves with little or no problem, or any help needed to do this.
