Orient-Thai's L1011 Routes?

Good afternoon,

I need some information about Orient Thai's L1011. Are they still flying? And if yes, on which routes are they flying?

I just looked on their homepage but in the timetable are only flights listed which are operated by the 747. I couldn't find any information about their L1011's, neiter in the "timetable", nor in the "about us" section of their website.

Any help is appreciated! It would be really great when I could fly on the L1011 since I never had the pleasure to be passenger on this aircraft type.

Patrick

These L1011s are not doing scheduled work as far as I know. Mostly charters I believe. I know someone who flew PNH-BKK on the Kampuchea-stickered TriStar.

If someone is looking for a 747-100 ride, OX267/266 daily on BKK-HKT-BKK are 747 flights and cost as little as 600 Baht. No way to get a 747-100 guaranteed though. Every day, same plane does both flights as it goes BKK-HKT-HKG-HKT-BKK.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Damn, I thought they are flying in the scheduled Orient-Thai network, seems that I will miss the L1011 again  Sad. But the 741 is also interesting for me since the -100 series is the only 747 type I never flew on, I will take a closer look now.

I found out that South East Asia is the perfect region to get flights on airplanes which are very rare here in Europe, for example the 717 of Bangkok Airways or the DC-9 of Cebu Pacific, yesterday I booked a Manila-Cebu roundtrip on the DC-9 for only 99 EUR per person on the German Expedia website.

I flew on one of their machines last year from SIN-BKK as it subbed for the Finnair. AY was so behind schedule that they stuck this on the tagged sector to maintain their schedule.

I have to say it ws one of the worst flights I have ever experienced. Cabin crew were amateurs and one of the crew went to the bathroom a dozen times with some sickness. In between she served the food. Not carts were secured and they rolled around the forward galley smashing a whole load of top quality Finnair glassware in the process. The carts manage to pin one stewardess in the bathroon on landing (for one last barf). Two carts locked the crew in the cockpit on landing. All of this was viewed from seat 1A (my aircraft had a very dated two-class cabin). It was tough for them getting all of the meal trays back in the carts before landing so they placed them on the floor of the galley. Never again.

I suppose none of this can happen if they do not serve food, though.

Patrick,

They may end up doing any OX flights. You never know what happens with Orient Thai. I'm about to finish my trip report - there will be plenty of OX stuff. But I can tell you being the only passenger on the upper deck of a -200 or one of 36 total in a 747-100 is quite damn nice.  Big grin

OX 121 to Chiang Mai (evening flight) is usually a 747 as well. UTH/HDY/CEI should be 757s but since one of their only two 757s is often doing Japan-Siem Reap charters, you may end up with a half empty 747 or a note at their office "Our flight canceled today". (saw that at Udon Thani). Not sure about the 747 fleet situation at the moment, but for most of June UTD (100) UTK (300) and UTI (200) seemed to pick up most of the work - UTB/UTC (200) UTH (100) were at BKK with some mechanical problems and UTP/UTJ (200) were parked at HKT each time I was there.

I'll be doing MnL-CeB in August as well - probably with Air Philippines as their promo fares are only EUR 26 each way on mostly 737-200 non-adv.

My 747 flights and a sole 757 flight were fine - much younger and nicer cabin crew than on TG domestics usually. But one should not expect OX to be on time.

Edited to add: Patrick, another interesting plane should be the YS11. You could do BKK-Buriram (BFV), HKT-HDY and CNX-CEI/UTH with 9R (Phuket Air). Also Asian Spirit should have them in the Philippines.

What, only 26 EUR/oneway?  Wow! I noticed that flying in South East Asia is cheap but I didn't know that it is that cheap!

I already saw all your cabin shots while browsing through the photo database yesterday evening, now I can't wait to read your trip report!

Thanks for all the information about OX!

Patrick, if you go to airphils.com and click on fares, there is a new "outright purchase fare" added. It's also valid via ILO and BCD. But a DC9 beats the 732 any day  Smile If you're staying in Cebu, your Cebu Pacific boarding pass gets you a decent deal at Cebu Midtown Hotel (see more info at cebupacificair.com) if you're looking for a cheaper place than the Marriott.

Of course and especially because I never flew on a DC-9  Smile.

Thanks a lot for all these information! Currently I am searching for a hotel and I was shocked when I looked on the German site of "Hotel Reservation Service" (http://www.hrs.de) because they only offered one hotel on the island which had the fare of 192,00 USD per night. I will look at the Cebu Pacific site now.

Marriott is usually 52 USD with tax, Cebu Midtown should be something like 25 EUR with Cebu Pacific discount. Waterfront Cebu is about the same as Marriott. Feel free to email me for stuff about CeB/MnL etc. Should have the trip rep up tonight.
