Great news!

During the Australian summer, UA plans to increase frequency between LAX and SYD by 3 more flights per week.

It looks like the Aus/NZ - US market is doing quite well, as the new routes and increased frequencies attest to. Just within the past year, we've seen the announcement of

HA HNL-SYD
QF LAX-BNE
NZ SFO-AKL
NZ LAX-CHC

and now increased

UA LAX-SYD
QF LAX-MEL

I'm liking this!

That is great news for United. Hopefully these new flights will be successful and they can continue to offer these flights in years to come.

I was wondering when UA was going to step up and try to really compete in this market.

Would have been nice to see one of these flights to go via AKL, just get NZ to service it rather than the old model of almost 100 ground staff dedicated to 2 flights a day.

If UA have announced their intentions t increase their services to OZ, will this not cause 'friction' between them and SQ, should SQ get the rights to fly to the US via Australia?? What are their relations like in the Star Alliance?? Could they code share their services?

SQ and UA have nearly no relation unless they are both in star. And they dont code-share between the USA and SIN.

I am not sure if SQ places its code on UA flights in the USA. In their printed timetables they have some connection flights listet in USA by UA, but they also have Delta, America West and one or two others.

SQ was very selective with code-shares in the past (they have expanded their number of partners in the last couple of month); I only remember that they have longer lasting agreements with LH, BM, VS and NZ.

"And they dont code-share between the USA and SIN. "

Wrong. They code-share on the JFK-FRA-SIN flight. Oh, and BMI's code is BD, not BM.

This is great news. Now only if they could step it up a bit, and introduce PTVs and better seats on their B747-400s (a long shot, I know, but one can dream...).

@PanAm330

could you clarify your comment? With whom should the code-share on JFK-FRA-SIN? They operating this flight by themself, so only an other carrier could place its code on their flight. LH had its code on the USA-leg, but they stopped it some month ago!

As far as I know SQ has an code-share with VS from MAN-MCO, maybe some other VS routes.
But anyway, may comment was regarding the question about UA and SQ, and there is definitely no code-sharing on any international route between them. But SQ has an extensive code-share with AC to Canada, but not to the USA.

I remember that somebody from another forum living in SIN said that SQ doesn't see UA as an airline offering an equal service level. But there code-share policy changed a little bit in the last month and became more extensive, so we might also see some code-share with UA in the future.

Great news for United and better news for aussie and american travellers.
Hopefully this will reduce fares on the route.

Does anyone know if UA plan on installing PTV's on their 747's?

Where did you get this from? When will this start? All year round I guess?

They need to upgrade their B 744s a bit then in order to compete with QF.
