Good question - I would love to understand the real detail. I suspect it is very complicated! I understand that Swiss failed to join OneWorld because of a dispute over the accounting for FFP points with BA.

I believe that the airline issuing the ticket with the miles pays the operating carrier a fixed amount for each seat on a certain flight. For example, if you were to use CO OnePass miles on a NW-operated flight, CO pays NW for the ticket. It's much lower than full fare, but they still pay nonetheless. However, NW also issues WorldPerks awards on CO, so I would wonder how much it balances out in the end.
