If flights are delayed or cancelled due to bad weather at the origin/destination airport, do the airlines have to pay for the extra time they are on the ground?

No I don;t believe so, as long as the monthly rent for that station is paid, the plane can sit there as long as it wants. I believe the only way the airport would make more money is if a diversion came in and then they (airline) would be charged a landing fee.
