I have been following the Persian langauage press in Iran. The Supreme Economic Council has just approved purchase of 22 MD-90s to a tune of USD 460 million. These are for Iran Air's subsidary Iran Air Tours (B9/IRB). The Iranian Civil Aviation Authority (IRICAO) has also just awarded MD-90 its Iranian type certification. I have several questions:
1) Were are the planes sourced from? The major operators of the type are DL, SV, SK and JS. They do not seem to be ready to release them.
2) The type is US made and under embargo. How are they getting around that?
3) For reason #2, I doubt that the source is the ex-Reno Air/American Airlines planes currently in storage.
4) Who is going to support the planes? The engines are RR. There is no problem with them. The rest of the plane would be a big problem.
Any thoughts would be graetky appreciated.

There are only five ex-AA/Reno MD-90 in storage. Probably the planes come from Delta, there have been rumours for a while they might want to get rid of them.
Another source could be SV as the MD-90 does not suit them well on many domestic routes. JAL might also be interested in replacing the former JAS aircraft.

Iran Air has also bought several used A310-200 and -300 in the past (GE engines) so I don't think it would be a major problem to get used MD-90s.

Btw, the engines are not RR, they are IAE V2500s.

Regards
Udo

Udo,
Thanks for the info. You are right about the engines. I was thinking of the B717 (MD-95). Be as it may, IAE engines are part RR and fairly easy for IR.
The A310s have been a white elephant for IR. They have been difficult to maintain. There was a huge scandal about their acquisition. It almost brought done the then Iranian Minister of Roads and Transportation to his knees.
You are also right about the low number of ex-Reno planes. The MD-90s have proven difficult for SV. They cannot fly to some places previously served by SV B737-200s. I thought that the Saudi's are going to irritate their American masters by busting their embargo.
Best

Another source for the MD90's may be China Southern/Eastern, as they are reported to be ready to retire them soon. HELLO has one MD90 and is evaluating N744BC currently @ VCV, a former AMC craft as was HB-JIA (N743BC) also rescued from VCV.

D950. Thanks for the info. I suppose China is more likely to break the embargo than Saudi Arabia.
