I have just been informed that my Great Grand Father has just passed. At 99 he almost made it to 100. I need to know what would be the quickest way to get from SFO to HKG. Could care less what airline, what a/c. Hell you can throw me on the wing of an A340 if it'll get me there quicker. I will be on the phone for a while so this is why I am asking the wise minds of the many a.net members to help me out here.

Thanks again guys (and even a few gals).

http://www.cheaptickets.com/ is good. I couldn't find anything ORD-LHR for less than $667 next month, but then found a fare of $450 on that site. It will get you some good prices and I'm sure some airlines might have a "Bereavement Fare" where if you prove that you are going to a funeral, family emergency, etc. you can get on for cheaper too. Check with the airlines to see about that.

PS - Sorry to hear about your great grandfather.  Sad

Thanks! This death doesn't hit home for me b/c I bairly knew the man but am very close to his daughter (my grandmother). And whatever the grandmother says goes. And she wants to get out of the country and to her house in Hong Kong to be with her family. I wish I knew the man. He appearently owned about 1/3 of the land in Hong Kong and sold it off to the government for loads of $$ and has always been a successful man.

The last time I saw him was last November and to show respect to him we would respect his daughter (my grandmother) so we would walk with her even though she walks slower. Now shes 76 and he is/was 99. He would walk about 2x faster than she would. He was always a funny guy to go and meet.

When I think of this man I think of an old successful guy who got up in the morning to get to work (self enployed). Every day he wore the same suite (the type of guy with a closet full of the same $hit) and every day he would walk to his office in the heart of Hong Kong.

He has been working with the same people sense he first started. He had a driver who would go at every call he made. Eventually he got too old to drive (LOL) so he just keeps him around as an assistant.

He was always very nice when he would host us in his native city and would always show the most respect to both myself and my grandmother. I came to learn a lot of Asain culture b/c of him and b/c I took the time out of my day (as he saw it but really it was a pleasure/honor to see him) he would pay for my airline tickets so he also allowed me to have my many longhauls.

Though I would make a point of seeing him every year or so (Average of 2-3 times a year) I never got to get as close to him as I would have wanted but charished every moment I had with him. This is sad but not going to stop me from posting and living my daily life.

Thanks again guys for everything!

Expedia got me a $1,571.90 fare, departing tomorrow and coming back on the 25th of August, since that was the only day that CX had empty seats (the booking feature on the website wasn't working, though) with the routing being SFO-TPE-HKG-ICN-SFO, on CI and KE.

Sorry to hear about your Great-Grandfather's passing. My own grandmother died two years ago. R.I.P.  Sad

Thanks OB1504. I'm more sorry to hear of your loss even 2 years ago. My grandmother passed a year ago and it really can't be the same even now. I wish you the best.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather , the shortest one's would be CX or SQ .Both are non stops .Seat availability should not be a problem as such because outbound traffic is generally free this time around. You can also try OZ to HKG , but this will be through ICN. The following are the details

CX873 SFO HKG Dep 0130 Arr 0640 +1 Y OK J OK
SQ1 SFO HKG DEp 0125 Arr 0630 +1 Y OK J OK

Return flights are full however and you mihgt need to wait for getting some kind of a confirmation on your return , going there is no problem at all, the flights I checked for are for tomorrow 08/13.

Regards

UA777222, My condolences and my thoughts are with you. I am facing the very same thing at this moment with my 99 yr old granny in Texas.

I won't post details but Southwest is being very good to me.

You guys are great. It will take time for it to hit me. Right now I'm just calling people and informing them. I will be giving up my miles to give the Grand Mother a First Class ticket on UA tonight. I will catch up with her when I can. It's killing me that I have to just send her on an airplane and even first class wont help for 14hrs and then she will have to be her shining self and will have to manage until I can catch up with her. UA has always been great to me. I have other comitments that I can't just drop (School ralley, oreantation, sister going to college...) so I will be on the next flight when able.

Cost is not an issue I just need to know my options.

Thanks again for being so helpful.

StearmanNut, Sorry to hear about you and your family. My thought's and prayers are with you.

Thanks.

Hey guys,

It's about 5am here in Hong Kong. I caught UA869 even when they told me I wouldn't. Left about 15 min. late and arrived about 20 min late. Took the train into Hong Kong and am currently staying at the JW Marriott on the Hong Kong side not the Kowloon side. They were very kind of allowing me to stay with my grandmother in her room. Have a great view of the harbor and the winding roads. Though I really wasn't close to the man I have learn to respect him and all of his achievements.

The next few days will consist of many meals and a few ceremony's. I would personally like to thank all of you for your support and kind words. Though some of my posts might be a bit childish and my information a bit off you have still given me much respect and many kind words of advice.

Thanks again guys and I will be returning on SQ in about a day or so after I know all is well for my grandmother to say alone. Thanks again.

About 3,000 round trip business. It was $1000 with a free upgrade on UA and the return is about $2500 on SQ business. Airport taxes included. This was walk up to the counter and tell them of my situation and they said I wouldn't make that afternoon's SFO-HKG but that they could put me on the SQ 1am flight.

I waited at the gate and was called for the UA flight suprisingly. Which ever flight I too they charged about $1000 for that. I am currently staying at the JW Marriott and they too were very nice. The flight crew knew what was up and let me board first. The SQ people met me at the gate and had a pass for the rail system and $$ for the rail system due to the fact that I had no money in that currency. They pulled it out of their pockets to there's a big tip for them when I arrive back at HKG. After reaching the final destination I took a taxi to the hotel where they accommodated me.

I will be leaving on the 17th.

Thanks for the help.
