I was looking up some N numbers of airplanes I used to fly and I came up with something interesting:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check for printing
N-number : N721TE
Aircraft Serial Number : 217
Aircraft Manufacturer : AEROSPATIALE/ATR
Model : ATR 72 202
Engine Manufacturer : P&W CANADA
Model : PW124
Aircraft Year : 1991
Owner Name : FEDERAL EXPRESS CORP
Owner Address : ATTN: VP SUPPLEMENTAL AIR OPS
: 2892 BUSINESS PARK DR
MEMPHIS, TN, 38118
Type of Owner : Corporation
Registration Date : 08-Sep-2003
Airworthiness Certificate Type : Standard
Approved Operations : Transport
*N721TE is an ex-Trans States Airlines aircraft.
I thought this was rather interesting... I was under the impression that FEDEX was only going to operate the ATR-42-300. Any FEDEX knowledgeable folks care to comment?
Note: It is possible that FEDEX could have purchased more ex-Trans States birds. It appears that the N numbers on most to of the others have been changed so they are not searchable on an N number database.

I thought they'd only be operating the ATR-42 as well, but the -72 will also do well for them.

Theres another thread floating around...I actually had posed the same question. The response that I got was in the US they will be operated by Mountain Air Cargo like the F-28's. I hadn't even heard they were getting ATR's...it'll be neat to see this.

I retired from FedEx about 9 months ago so Im not quite as on top of the info line as I used to be but this is the first I've seen regarding 72's. The 42 project has been in the works for quite some time though. It would not however be surprising at all to see 72's in the fleet as well. Cube space is generally a bigger issue with express carriers than weight anyway. There are plenty of markets throughout the system where the 72 would fit nicely.

XFSUgimpLB41X did you mean the F27's instead of the 28's?

Of course he meant F27... Crummy keyboards!
All of this begs the question: Who will operate the ATR-72s?
Does anyone know for sure what they have to do to the airplanes to prep them for freight? Install roller mats?
