The Most 'Italian' Airport...In Egypt?

A few months ago I visited the new Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam (and I had a great time there). Anyway I noticed at the airport that most of the flights arriving were from Italy.

I was able to get in contact with the someone from airport management, who confirmed that depending on the time of year, Italians make up between 85% to 95% of passengers, which came as quite a surprise. Anyway last year (2003) the airport handled just under 1.5 million passengers (2.1 million expected this year), so the airport is not that small.

Here is the airport website

http://www.marsa-alam-airport.com (try out the flash demo)

Here is the link to flight arrivals/departures:

http://www.marsa-alam-airport.com/flightschedule.asp

Looking at today's (saturday) schedule all flights are from Italy operated by A32Xs, B737s and B763s.

So anyway my point is, could this be the most 'Italian' influenced airport?

Horus,

It is truly interesting to find out that this airport is served almost exclusively by Italian airlines. I mean, you find airports in Mexico whose sole international destination is USA (about 25), but still they have plenty of domestic flights (at least two dailies to either MEX, GDL or MTY)

Apart from three or four weekly flights to CAI, Marsa Alam is devoted enterily to Italy. Impresive!

Thank you for posting this and allowing us to know a different Egyptian airport!

Next flight: IAH-DBX-MRU-ANT

Pzurita1, there are actually only 2x weekly flights to CAI (3 in winter) not 4 Big grin. The flights are operated by PAS Dash 7 or 8 aircraft.

When I was at FCO last week, there seemed to be two or three flights in one day to M. A.

Ts-ior, I know there flights from The Netherlands, UK, Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Czech, Saudi Arabia, (no France yet) but by far Italy is number one.

Pe@rson, did you see other flights to Egypt (except CAI)?

Hmm... I can't really remember. I certainly saw a couple to M.A. though.

Pe@rson, there were 14 flights from Italy to Marsa Alam the other day; 5 from Milan, 4 from Rome, 1 from Bologna, 1 from Naples, 1 from Verona, 1 from Venice and 1 from Turin.

Thanks for the info Gkirk! Surprised its better than the LGW flights. BRS is still a surprise to me. BHX have flights to LXR, and not, SSH. Do you know how the new flights from GLA and LTN are doing?

Well I got the info that the NCL flight was outperforming the southern airports from a Newcastle online newspaper.
I suspect the GLA flights are doing well

Thanks for the info Gkirk!

Is Marsa Alam getting more UK flights this winter besides Excel's weekly LGW Wednesday B738 flight?
