My uncle had been down there last week and said there was a new airport being built S. of there by Hollister (Missouri). There is a 4 lane highway that dead ends there where it's going to be built (supposely). He also said it's supposed to be Int'l. What's the deal here? What airlines might serve it? Just curious as to why there building it. It's a little ways to SGF but not to far.

Currently, there's pretty much just the College of the Ozarks Airport in Branson which is large enough for small props and very small jets. I never heard of plans for a new airport in Branson so I did some searching and I found this: http://www.bransonair.net/ . There's not a lot of details. I don't think Branson alone can support scheduled air service, even with the tourism there. Maybe I'm wrong. This airport looks like it will be better suited for larger bizjets and props with some charters.

When you consider that the Branson area is a major US tourist destination (over 8 million visitors a year, and a projected 10 million by 2010), a larger airport there does make sense. On a related note, how far away is XNA from there?

I would guess around 60 or 70 miles by looking at the map. Doesn't sound all that far, but most is 2 lane and curvey/slow.
Very interesting. It would be neat to see it open in 2005. Looking at the airport website, they have stars in MSP, DEN, PHX, DTW, ATL, CLT and DEN, possibly meaning they would like air service from those cities. Wonder what runway length they are looking at, maybe the 6,000 to 9,000 foot range? Also I wonder about the gates, I was thinking around 8 or 10 maybe.

Boy I am sure that SGF is not happy about this, considering it is called the Springfield-Branson regional airport. SGF is trying to build a new midfield terminal in the next couple years, should increase capacity and from what I understand they are trying to get Branson to partner instead of get their own airport. The road between SGF-Branson is much better and 4 lane (was there 2 weeks ago).
I'm not sure Branson would do all that well having an airport on it's own and I'm sure it would hurt SGF. I've done a few flights out of there and thought they were all great.
XNA isn't really any competition to SGF for Branson because as Iowaman says, the roads are 2 lane curvy and dangerous. XNA is mainly for Wal-Mart. I think that even DL has some flights from to from NY (not sure from which airport) just to serve Wal-Mart.
Personally, I think it would be in all of s/w Missouri's best interest to focus on SGF. I'd hate to see a competing airport so close. They lost quite a bit of service when TWA went out. I remember flying MD-80s and 727s to STL from there. Now's it's all small planes.
