I was recently looking for a flight from Norfolk to visit my sister near Williamsport, PA. Only one airline serves IPT (guess who??)

I looked on www.usairways.com and was given a choice of 18 different fares for the same Dash-8:

All fares are roundtrip, and all involve a connection at either PIT or PHL, there is no service from Williamsport to Charlotte.

For $106, I can fly out on Tuesday or Wednesday, and return no earlier than the following Tuesday.

For $144, I can fly out Monday-Saturday, excluding holidays and any Friday leading into a holiday weekend, and return no earlier than the following Monday.

For $156, I can fly out any day of the week, including holidays, and return no earlier than the following Sunday.

For $168, same thing but more flight choices available.

For $171, I can fly out between Sept. 8 and Sept. 25, except Friday and Sunday, and return no earlier than the following Monday and no later than Sept. 30th.

For $191, I can fly out on August 30, 31, Sept. 1, 2, or 4 and return on Sept. 6 or 7.

For $192, I can fly out between Sept. 8 and Sept. 25, and return no earlier that the following Sunday and no later than Oct. 1.

For $196 I can fly out any day after Sept. 15 except Friday and Sunday, and return the following Monday or Tuesday.

Also for $196, I can fly out any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, and return exactly 7 days later.

For $206, I can fly out any Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, and return exactly 7 days later.

Also for $206, I can fly out any day after Sept. 15 except Sunday, and return no earlier than the following Monday.

For $210, I can fly out any day between Sept. 8 and 25, and return no earlier than the following Sunday.

For $212, I can fly out August 30 through September 4, and return on Sept. 5, 6, or 7.

For $230, I can fly out August 23 through September 4, and return no earlier than the following Sunday and no later than Sept. 7.

For $231, I can fly out any day except Friday or Sunday, and return no earlier than the following Monday. 14-day advance purchase required. Must return within 30 days.

For $244, I can fly out any day except Tuesday or Wednesday, and return no earlier than the following Sunday, but not on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

For $262 I can fly out any day between Sept. 8-25, and return no earlier than the following Sunday.

For $859, I can fly out any day and return any day.

18 different fares, same crappy Dash-8. No way am I paying $859 to fly in a DHC, period. Those planes aren't worth $859, in my opinion.

Oddly enough, flying from PIT to IPT, I can get there for $177 flying any day and returning any day. And Independence Air will get me from ORF to PIT for $155. Problem is this itinerary will take me all day. I can drive from Norfolk to Williamsport in 7 hours.

And people wonder why US profits are in the toilet.

I will be 1000% happy when USAirways get their fare structure from 200 different fares to 3 or 4! At that point, a lot more people will begin to like USAirways again... using that website is a pain in the tuccus!

$156 roundtrip, 7 day advance purchase, any day of the week, Saturday night stay. And you're complaining?! That's *incredibly reasonable*. What does it matter how many fares they're offering, and if there's a $859 full-Y fare, so long as there's a cheap fare with reasonable restrictions? Some people are never happy.

That's right, the LCCs don't, and won't, serve places like IPT. If they're not EAS--IPT might be, I'd need to check--and US leaves, they won't have *anyone* serving them.

US's fare structure isn't any different from the other legacy carriers. Indeed, US has made the largest strides to change their fare structure with GoFares.

I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

That is why US is no good in my opinion. Not to mention before B6 came along and before WN became as popular as they are US would rape you on fares. It is why they are sinking fast.

Those GoFares only apply to US routes that have a LCC competitor offering the same exact service.

Not everyone can spend a Saturday night. We don't all work Monday-Friday. Because of my work, I can't go anywhere on the weekend without burning what little vacation time I get. And besides, that wasn't the point of my post. Yes $156 is very reasonable given the restrictions. But the restictions don't fit my life, even a little bit. And the point I was trying to make (I guess I didn't make it very well) was that when you're looking for a flight on usairways.com, you have to wade through 18 different fares to get what you're looking for.

The Saturday rule is one reason why people like me are flocking to LCCs. They don't have the Saturday night stay requirement. More and more people, especially those of us who work in healthcare, law enforcement, travel and tourism, fast food, convenience stores, retail, and the media have work schedules like Tuesday-Saturday, Wednesday-Sunday, or Friday-Monday. We all have our days off in the middle of the week, which are the most expensive days to fly. Even upper management in some of these places can't take weekends off because that's prime-time for theme parks, retail stores, and police/fire/rescue. The Saturday rule is outdated. I'm not mom, dad, and the kids getting away for the weekend. I'm single, work weekends, and just want to visit a family member for a couple of days. And there are a lot of others out there just like me.

And I realize LCCs will never serve places like IPT, they are just too small and in the middle of nowhere. Which is why I will just have to endure the DC highway traffic to get there.

yah tell me about their fare structure, very very very wacky indeed!!!!

For instance, i checked BOS>DAY (Dayton) connections in either LGA, DCA, PIT or PHL, and i got 4 insanely different fares. I got as low as $188, and as high as like couple hundred. Fly out early early morning both ways, you get a lower price. It's weird and wacky, plus they have not full gotten used to being in star alliance (and I know this has nothing to do with the fare structure or anything) but I didnt receive credit for one flight, and when i call to give them my SQ ff# to put in to the reservation, they still have no idea what 2 letter code the airlines are. I usually say it and then there person goes "leeet me seee *thinks*" and i jump in and say "your looking for the two letter code for Singapore Airlines right?" and they laugh..

They'll make it eventually...but so far most of my flights have been so so, or worse.
