US AIRWAYS EXPRESS TO BEGIN CHARLOTTE-GEORGE TOWN SERVICE

ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 17, 2004 -- US Airways announced today that it will introduce service between Charlotte, N.C., and George Town, Bahamas on Dec. 18, 2004, the airline’s fifth nonstop destination in the Islands of the Bahamas.

US Airways Express operator PSA Airlines will fly the new service each Saturday using 70-seat Canadair Regional Jet 700s.

"This new service, coupled with the start of our new marketing relationship with Bahamasair, expands our breadth of service not only to the Bahamas, but to the choice of popular island destinations that we serve from Charlotte," said Douglas D. Leo, US Airways vice president of sales and international.

US Airways currently serves 18 Caribbean and Latin American destinations from Charlotte. New nonstop Charlotte-Liberia and Charlotte-Barbados service will begin on Feb. 12, 2005. Codeshare flights with Bahamasair will begin on Sept. 15, 2004.

Cool news. This is GGT's only non-stop service outside of the Miami area. American Eagle and Continental Connection both fly to GGT from MIA and FLL, respectively. The area has experienced a huge boom in tourism lately thanks to the new luxury resorts.

I think this is a good example of a route that the UP partnership helped to create. US might not have been able to make a 1x weekly to GGT work in the past, but now offers the option of, say, a CLT-GGT-NAS-CLT itinerary if a pax doesn't want to only travel on a Saturday. (Quite similar to the EGE station and the UA codeshare.)

MAH4546, US Airways Express has served GGT from Florida in the past, haven't they? They continue to serve ELH and MHH, and they served TCB and GHB until recently, but haven't served any of the other smaller points in a while.
