I understand only two are being returned to service, is that correct?

"They are planning to reintroduce only the 5 MDD-11 Combi, since the 3 all pax were sold to LH Cargo. But as other people mentioned it's only a temporary solution in the mean time B763 got the new configuration and new planes will join the fleet."

I saw the stored MD-11s (plus the A300s) at CIA last week, next to which were the 3 GH DC-10s.

Funny how the PAX versions were sold to LH to be converted to (F) config.. You would think they'd go for the Combi models first. Does having the cargo door aft make that big of a difference?

Would be nice to see it at ORD again.....i saw the SWISS MD-11 about a week ago here at ORD when i was trying to get on a flight to DFW. I made sure i got to the window very fast to see its departure. I think that is going to be the last time i see a SWISS MD-11......hope not but i live over an hour away now so i dont get the opertunity anymore to see the cool birds.

Pe@rson-

Funny you saw them at CIA seeings as there are no Alitalia planes at CIA.

Perhaps you are confusing which airport you were at? Last I checked, the AZ M11M's, along with the A300's and the GH DC10's were all at the more well known, bigger Roman airport - Fiumicino (FCO).

They will start M1M operations on November 3rd 2004, on MXP-DEL daily.
The MXP-BOM will remain a 763 route untill March 26th 2005 then it will be changed to a M1M.

When will SWISS dispose of their last MD11? Do they only have one MD11 flying at the moment? I bought the SWISS MD11 dvd from justplanes and it's just fantastic. I was planning to go plane spotting in ZRH next month and was hoping to see the SWISS MD11. Is the spectator's terrace still open in ZRH? Any info on this is welcome.

was at FCO in july and saw some AZ MD-11s hanging around.

According to their magazine, the MD-11 is still part of the fleet.

According to the timetable, there are no routes scheduled for MD-11 service.

Yes, reason is that Combis has the cargo door in the back of the a/c - which is very uncomfortable for a/c which is tail heavy when on ground! Even having the door in front is causing some problems and a very strict (un-)loading sequence must be adhered to!

LH Cargo want's to have the door in front of the a/c as they have it in the already existing 14 x MD11F's!

A388, As far as I know Swiss have a single MD-11 that operates on their daily ORD flights. Flight LX8 departs ZRH at 10:10, returning back on 08:10. They will start using the A332 on the route at the start of the winter season, so you need to hurry if you want to get a few pics.

Hope this helps

Horus

Thanks for the info Horus. As usual, I can count on you. Thanks again, I hope to be able to go to ZRH next month for one day to go aircraft spotting. I love the SWISS livery. I have a feeling tickets for one day will be very expensive though  Sad

Always happy to help A388. I 100% agree that ticket prices to ZRH tend to be high. Going there for a few days is expensive enough, so I can only imagine how expensive a day return will be. Anyhow I hope you have a great time and hope to see some of your photos of the DB...Don't let us down  Big thumbs up

Horus

p.s. I think the LX c/s is nice, but I have to admit it took me time to get used to it...I was/am a big Swissair fan.

According to this topic,
http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1701483, "the last Swiss MD11 flight will leave ZRH on the 30OCT04 to ORD and will leave it's last operation from ORD to ZRH where [it] will arrive on the 31OCT04."

You are right Horus. The SWISS livery also had to grow on me, but now I like it. It is still very Swiss-like. And you are right about the prices. I checked the SWISS website and a one-day trip would cost me 460.94 euros. KLM charges 573.94 euros pfffff. All of a sudden I'm not sure about doing this trip. Time will tell...  Sad

It is a bit sad that, even though AZ is bringing 2 MD-11's to service, there are no plans to serve MEX. I really hope that either AZ or AM start non-stop service between Mexico and Italy soon.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

the md11 combi must be a nightmare to load
its already very tail heavy
and to have cargo only in the rear section assuming its there before the pax board must throw the c of g well back
