Once again we have had a incident on a plane with a passanger and fire. But this one is a quite amusing IMO
An english man in his midage who was on his way from Bergen to London on Braathens, got tired and felt a shamed of his reading material. Yes it was porn magazines.
He kindly asked the stewardess if he could burn them in the pentry oven but got refused. What does the man do then? He makes a campfire under his own seat with the porn magazines! After a while the stewardess smells the burning, and finds out that the smartass had a fire under his seat. Thankfully the fire wasn't bigger than they could put it out and continue to London.
The guy was mentally ill, and will be brought in for justice in London.

Over reaction again. I don't like how people have to make a big deal over nothing at all. Oh no a porno!!!! So let's start a fire to get rid of it. Just throw it in the seat next to you and blame it on that guy if anyone asks!

Safetydude,
I was wondering the same thing as well. There are thrashbins out on the toilet. No one would notice if he put them in there.
But I guess he didn't want anyone to have them. hehe

We must be thankful that the situation was considerably less severe than it could have been; indeed, it appears that it was, in this instance, completely harmless because the flight attendant became aware of the fire quickly indeed.
While we do not have all the facts and we do not know the extent of this man's mental illness, there is no doubt in my mind, based on only the information at hand, that he did not directly intend to cause harm to the aircraft or any passenger contained therein, but rather to merely distroy his magazines. In my mind, he certainly acted recklessly (I wonder the extent to which he could knowingly be reckless), but he undoubtedly did not intend to cause any harm to anything, bar the magazines. His illness most probably resulted in him not considering the potential consequences of his actions.
I am confident, again based merely on the limited information we have, that but for his illness he would not have committed the act, for any sane and reasonable person would know instantly that they do not burn anything on an aircraft.
I wonder whether this case will be brought to trial. Let's wait and see.

This man's mental illness, depending upon the extent of it, most probably prevented him from thinking rationally and reasonably, hence his apparent willingness to create a fire aboard an aircraft and run the risk of causing grave harm to both the aircraft and the passengers. It does not take half a second of rational thought to know you just do not do that, but he clearly thought it was OK, so preceeded to do it. We must not be too harsh on him, under the circumstances, but be thankful that nothing worse occurred.

Pe@rson,
No one has been harsh against him. And I think most of us in here knows that it's not normal to light up a porn magazine under your seat
Once again that was the reason I wrote he was mentally ill, so people could see that it wasn't an act of plain stupidity.

I hope that the "overreaction" was aimed at the guy, not us. Starting a fire is a pretty big deal.

Apparently, from another forum, he took exception to ONE pic of a black man with a white woman.
Damn, if he worked for my employer, he'd burned the warehouse down.
What is a bit surprising is how well porn does sell in the newsstands at the airport. In some of the shops I used to stck, we'd have to bring in a bundle of many of the titles every other day. But I've never seen anyone "reading" one while on a plane though, maybe it's reading material for that trip to the lav?

This incident suggests that the people we have most to fear about creating a terror incident are the ones whom don't fit the stereotypes. It is sad the mental illness of this person could have led to the deaths of a large number of people on this flight. Detecting such risky people are something airport security hasn't ability to or even the obligation to detect. That he was trying to burn up the porn suggests someone who has conflicts within himself about it. I hope he gets the help he needs and not allowed on another flight until he is 'better'.

How do you start a fire?
I thought all matches and lighters are banned from planes now.
While I am not sure about the UK, in the US, you are allowed to take up to two lighters or four books of safety matches.

Anyway, if someone tries to burn a magazine in the lav and then asks the crew to burn it in the oven, you can be sure that any crew will keep a very close eye on them...

SafetyDude,
No no not at you guys at all. This guy. If you are that ashamed of something the last thing you would want to do is draw more attention to yourself, hence I said blame it on the unsuspecting guy next to you who is sleeping. Starting a fire on an a/c be it a cig. or a friggen bon fire is not ok and very very unsafe. Though he's a bit unlevel in the head that's no excuse to do such a childish act. If this is the man's approach to situations like this I suggest the courts ban him from being in public. For both his on safety and ours.
Thanks again and again towards the guy not you guys.

I worked as a programmer developing software for a Taxi firm and Dave Mason was a driver for them. IIRC he was suspended after an incident with a female passenger in his cab.
