HOU Airport Status?

Can anyone give me update status on HOU Airport? Did Southwest moved all flights to the new concourse? Or some flights are running out of Concourse A (I believe that's the concourse).

If the airport is under contruction, when will it be done?

Amtrak on a.net? Why not?

I was in the terminal at HOU last week. It appears all construction has been completed. The old WN ticket counter on the East end of the airport terminal is closed and the new ticket counter is in the "Central Concourse" as I have heard airport management at HOU refer to it as.

What I like about the design:
They took the old 1950's look and updated it slightly in the old section. They designed the new section to "blend" nicely via a brightly lit "transition zone" in front of the new WN ticket counter in the new section, which is at the entrance to the new section, about 75 feet or so from the main door into the terminal.

What I don't like about the new design:
The big circular window overlooking the ramp with the restaurant is totally gone. The restaurant (cafeteria style) is still there as is a windowless curved wall where the big window once was. It's also very dark in there. If you wanted to read during lunch, you would have a hard time doing it.
Now that all the construction is gone at HOU it is a very nice place to come into. And for the BizJet market there is Millionaire on the other end of the field from the main terminal.

I am very disappointed to hear that the panoramic restaurant viewing area is now gone. I was there last in '99-00' and was thinking at the time what a shame it would be if some of then pending re-modeling plans did not include keeping this unique design in place. Looks like my fears were founded. I have many fond memories of HOU as a child during the 60s before IAH opened and visiting that restaurant before catching flights or waiting for friends or relatives, was a definate high point of our familiy's soujourn to the airport.......It will be missed.

I felt the same way when I first saw what they did. It seems that they sheetrocked over the window as the curve is there in approximately the same place. The new terminal is immediately to the right and behind the area where the restaurant is. Rather than get daylight in from that big curved window, the ceiling in the new place has windows right under the roofline, allowing for lots of daylight to come into the transition area.
After looking at the new MDW and now HOU it seems that the latest trend in airport design is to cover up/frost up the windows so you can't see out. A lot of gates at MDW have frosted glass so you can't see the ramp from the departure lounge. Personally, I rather like looking at the aircraft's exterior before I board it.

Frankly, I don' t understand why airports are increasingly covering up the window views onto the ramps. Perhaps they see it as some sort security measure, if so this is just another example of brainless, bureaucratic thinking.

Last I heard, there are still a few flights that are operated out of terminal A, and they will continue to be there until some until mid-2005...

Last 4 times I was at HOU, there were no WN flights out of the old concourse. They have part of the old concorse closed, while the outside gates are still serving Delta, AA and somebody else. The old concourse on the other side was still servicing AirTran, probably somebody else too. But the new one was all WN.
