Okay...
Let's say that you are travelling on a US domestic flight and you will not be checking in any baggage.

Aside from gaining access to the security checkpoint, what purpose does check in serve?

What information could the airline gain that it doesn't already know? Since passengers can check in 24 hours ahead of time, they could just as easily not show up.

In other words, why add this extra step? Couldn't passengers without bags just board the aircraft?

No. The airline needs to know that you will be present for your flight. Online check-in just saves people from having to do it at the check-in desk at the airport. It's also a matter of getting your boarding passes. Sure you have an itinerary and maybe a receipt, but you actually need to get the passes to authorize your entrance onto the aircraft.

Can one claim for refund if they checked-in online and then did not show at the gate? Do rules differ for not availing a flight before and after check-in?

But I guess technology has allowed us to change one thing: a necessary visit to the check-in counter (I love this -- but now airlines are not giving free milage points for online check-in  Sad )

I guess by doing a check-in (online or in person) the airlines get to see how many people will show up for a flight and therefore can plan for stand-bys better -- rather than waiting for the plane to fill up and then realizing that there may be more seats vacant than they anticipated.

Another thing- id be pretty pisst if I by-passed the check in counters only to walk all the way to my gate to find out that the flight had some sort of issue and maybe I needed to rebook back out in the lobby at the "check-in" counters. Or a large number of other reasons, I do not feel that check-in is a pain. Then again I pefer human contact over total computer operated services.

Since many airlines oversell, as was stated above, check-in lets them know how many are actually going to show up for the flight. Also, it allows you to create a manifest of who is actually on board the aircraft.
