Connies In Delta's 1950's Fleet

On an excellent site that a fellow "A-NET" member shared regarding airline fleets; I noticed DL flew some Connies along with their DC-7 Crown props. However, I have had no luck finding out much information regarding this. I'm going to submit a photo request on the appropriate forum. I wonder, how long DL flew them and on what routes? Of course, they flew in and out of ATL. Did DL lease them? Or, did they inherit them from an airline merged into their system. And of course which variants did they fly?

DL inherited six from their merger with Chicago and Southern (C&S) in 1953. Five of those were delivered as 649's and then upgraded to 749's. The sixth was delivered as a 749. These flew with C&S from 1950 to 1953. And with DL to 1954/1955. Three were sold to TWA (1954) and three were sold to Pacific Northern (1955). These mostly flew Chicago-New Orleans (and all points between) then onto the Caribbean.

DL purchased an additional four they flew from 1956 to July 1958. They were purchased from Pan Am as 49's and upgraded to 149's. These flew to New York when DL added service into Idlewild (JFK). They were simply used until Douglas could deliver all of the DC7's. DL was expanding faster than they were receiving new planes.

I recall that for a time after the merger DL was also referred to as Delta C & S. Haven't seen any pics of those planes, though.

After the Delta-C&S merger, Delta was temporarily known as Delta C&S, as Mr. Woolman, who was Delta's Chairman wanted the transition to be as easy on the Chicago and Southern employees as possible. Not much else changed, as only the engine cowlings on most airplanes had the Delta-C&S titles. By the end of the 50's, I believe the name was already back to Delta.

Braniff also flew Connies, I believe that had only three of them.

To add on to what OttoPylit said. Delta and C&S had fully intended on maintaining the Delta name after the merger. However, CE Woolman, Delta's CEO, didn't want there to be brand confusion with the C&S customers in the Midwest cities Delta previously did not serve. So they used the name Delta C&S. The C&S was dropped when Delta began serving NY. Again to avoid brand confusion as those going NY to the South were far more than those flying in the Midwest.

Starcruiser-The book mentioned by Deltamia is by R.E.G. Davies, a very excellent book on Delta, in it is a photo of the Connie in Delta C&S colors.

Citationjet-I remember that too, but when exactly did Braniff have them and what did they use them for? With the exception of South America, I could imagine the Connie was overkill for much of their system, except possibly DAL-NYC.....

Ottopylit-According to the above mentioned book, Delta C&S existed until Sep55, or for two years after the merger of 53.

The C&S 649s were, I think, purchased for the Chicago and Southern routes to Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

BN had two Constellations. My April 28, 1957 BN timetable shows them flying relatively short routes. DFW-SAT, CHI-MKC-ICT-OKC-DAL-HOU, SAT-DAL-OKC-CHI, HOU-DAL-TUL. They are not in the Feb 1, 1958 BN schedule.

it says that they purchased two second hand L-049s from Venezuelan's LAV. The 54 pax plane joined the fleet in 1955 they withdrew them from service in 1959.

My father was flying Delta connies out of Newark in 56' As stated before by DeltaMIA, Delta sold off the newer 749 from C&S and then needed more planes later and Pan Am planes were the best choice.....or so they thought.

Inside story here. Delta got the planes from Pan Am and they were in such bad shape it took months to get them on line. The planes were pulled apart to modify to 149 standard and were found to be in such poor condition the start of service was pushed back 2 1/2 months. All the pilots checked out waited and flew the 6/7 till the planes were ready. They were reliable and popular but the faster DC-7B was a better plane for the airline.

Two pictures exist of Delta connies. None show the tail. There are many of Delta C&S but only 2 in pure Delta colors available. Airliners.net has none in the archives so if you connie lovers ever run across some of these jewels, please post them. Michael

Delta also flew connies to Detroit. I have an old slide taken at YIP and there is a Delta Connie sitting at a gate behind some American Convairs.
