Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but Westjet will be starting service to PHX on October 5th. It will be twice a week between PHX and YYC. They are offering introductory fares of $72(CDN) one way. They also are adding LAX and SFO.

Effective October 5, 2004, WestJet will offer two non-stop flights per
week between Calgary and Phoenix with low introductory one-way fares of
$72.

I wonder what kind of impact this will have on America West's flights out of YYC to PHX?

Being twice weekly, I would imagine that the effects on HP's service will be negligible.

PHX based passengers will most likely use HP. YYC pax will use HP if they're looking to travel within Arizona or maybe if they've used HP in the past and prefer F.

What terminal will they be using? There is an empty gate at T2 and a few at T3.

All the YYC flights on HP are operated by Mesa, so they better get their act together or Westjet will steal some pax!

Air Canada used to operate PHX-YYC, didn't they? I see that they don't anymore.

Does anyone know what gate they will use, do they have to do customs here or will that be completed in YYC?

Thanks,

Yes AC used to fly PHX-YYC.

All the Canada flights (that I know of) are pre cleared in Canada so the plane can go to any gate.

I totally forgot about that. I know I would rather fly on a 737 than a RJ.

They will be using the International gates on the B concourse, presumably B27 or B25.

That $72 CDN rate works out to just $109.36 US for the round trip. ($144 CDN). Now THAT sounds like a deal, if in fact it can actually be had, and that availability isn't just one seat per week.

It is true that passengers departing YYC to US destinations got through customs here in YYC.

Passengers "pre-clear" US Customs, before departing from YYC or other Canadian Airports. The AWA & Mesa flights from YYC, YVR & YYZ use the domestic gates on the A or B Concourse @ Terminal 4 PHX. Perhaps, the lack of gates @ T2, T3 or T4, may facilitate using one of the gates on the International B Concourse. Depending on completion of the T4 South Concourse expansion (Southwest). Perhaps, WestJet will use a gate, which SWA currently is using & may not be using in the near future? B17, B19, B21, B22, B20 & B18 are domestic gates. B24, B26, B28, B27, B25 & B23 are International gates.
