The DOT has awarded it's annual small community air service grants. $19,853,546 has been awarded. 108 communities applied, and 40 communities in 37 states were granted grants as follows:

Albany, GA - $500,000
-US Airways service to Charlotte

Alpena, Michigan - $583,406
-Restoring 4 daily Northwest flights to Detroit
-Uncoupling at least one of those daily flights

Beckley/Lewisburg, West Virgina - $300,000
-Joint cordination with new airlines

Bloomington, Illinois - $800,000
-Westbound low fare service

Butte, Montana - $360,000
-Marketing program

Champaign/Urbana, Illinois - $200,000
-to continue funding existing Delta service to CVG

Charlottesville, Virginia - $270,000
-Upgrade service to Charlotte on US Airways from 4 daily props to 3 daily RJs

Chattanooga, Tenn. - $750,000
-Delta service to Dallas

Columbus, Mississippi - $260,000
-Marketing study

Del Rio, Texas - $318,750
-Continental Connection (Skywest) service to Houston

Dubois, Penn. - $400,000
-Lower fares
-Revenue guarantees on existing service

Eau Claire, Wisconsin - $500,000
-Midwest and/or Amtrak service to Milwaukee

What, no Safford, AZ service? - big losers again.

The line about Richmond is interesting as I would wonder why a federal government body would be used to offer inducements to an airline. Generally, that is a state and local government function.

lincoln's proposal was for rj to dtw and iah...dtw is a go and iah co said would be a go last year if they got the $$$$.

Great news for Salem, OR but I see Stockton, CA is not on the list of "winners" which surprises me. I though Modesto would have a great chance too

I'm surpised Lincoln, NE doesn't have any flights to STL? Didn't they used to?

I'm generally against govt. subsidies for corporations but in this case, bring 'em on. Gotta keep air service to these small towns as long as there is demand. I hope they don't subsidize only one or a handful of people.

Good observation, I totally missed that. It is possible that they both got a combined grant for the service.

I smell just a little politics here - Sarasota got by far the largest award, and yet already has service and is less than an hour from TPA. I'm not knocking the good folks of Sarasota, I just see a lot more need on some of those western cities vs. a city in the heart of FL, one of the most heavily served areas in the nation.

Looks like another winner is NW, as quite a few of the communities that received grants will be applying them towards new Northwest service... Sumter, SC is an odd one, but if their grants can really attract DTW service, more power to them.

Of course, the other big winner would be Web developers in HSV, and consultants in Columbus, MS... half a mil to fund a website, or a quarter mil for a simple marketing study?? Wow.

Although this isn't as bad as the EAS program, if flights out of these small towns were going out full, the subsidies wouldn't be necessary. At least with the SCASD grants, money will be applied to cities that actually stand a chance of sending out full aircraft.

Sumter's grant is to a run a shuttle bus to Colombia, South Carolina. Nothing for Northwest. I don't think they even have an airport, do they?

This makes a little more sense... I just glanced at the original post and missed "Waterloo, IA" two lines below Sumter, SC, probably because there wasn't a space between the two. My mistake.

I've always thought DTW-AVP was coming down the pipe, with CRJ's, good to see that hopefully this funding will make it a go.

What I really don't understand is that a lot of these awards/grants seem to be of the "me-too" variety. Especially the whole RJ vs. Prop issue. Its like "give us money cuz we want jets even though we don't have the passengers to support it" which is an argument that doesn't always fly. Sometimes it does. However, sometimes, once the money runs out, bye-bye jets.

Elmira got it last year, BGM the year before, thought it was our turn (ITH). With Usairways only flying to PHL/LGA soon and a terminal built in 1992 w/ possibly two jetways and tons of counter space I'm very dissapointed. Not surpised tho, most went to "battle ground states" or republican states...not NY for sure!

Yep it is. ACV and RDD filed a joint application for a $500,000 grant, with $76,000 in local matching. They proposed twice daily Q400 service connecting ACV and RDD to LAX. I can't tell how the flights will be routed. The app expects a startup date of Feb 14, 2005. QX also supplied a letter indicating they were interested in the route, with the usual qualifiers saying subject to various conditions.

Combine ACV/RDD with the STS grant and QX is looking at adding a number of Q400 flights at LAX. I wonder if they'll consider a few other cities out of LAX also.
