I'm flying CX for the first time, SFO-HKG on a 744 in economy. What type of meal service and entertainment should I expect? Internationally, SQ and EK seem well-respected. What about CX? How would you all characterize its reputation and service?
Any information about CX and this particular route is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't done SFO-HKG but I have done LAX-HKG... as well as HKG-MNL several times on CX. Service is comparable to SQ (have not flown EK) with friendly - and sometimes robotic - flight attendants and also in terms of food. The do peruse the cabin quite a few times throughout the flight and are quick to tend to your needs and requests. PTV's to get rid of boredom. CX seats seemed a little tighter than SQ however. Green, pasture-like interior is very soothing and relaxing to the eyes... one of my favorite interiors.
Enjoy your flight.

Have flown this a couple times in addition to LAX-HKG. Trick's synopsis was fairly spot on. If you get a cabin crew on the young side they will be rather robotic - it's the training not having worn off yet. That said, they're very attentive and will make you feel appreciated every step of the way.
The meal service is above the standard you're likely used to on any of our domestic carriers. Portion sizes aren't huge but the quality of the food is top notch. More than likely you'll hear a chipper Aussie voice coming from the flight deck - half the fun is trying to figure out what they're saying.
You can't go wrong with CX. Enjoy your 14 hours of Rolls Royce power over the drink.
If you need someone to blame / throw a rock in the air / you'll hit someone guilty

Hi Modesto2,
Go to airlinemeals.net and click on the area where it says "Browse Thousands of inflight meals". Then click on the navigation bar on the left where it says Cathay. Voila! Lot's of good looking food on board. Scroll down to see samlpe of that served in economy. Happy Trip

Agree with above comments. Last flew SFO - HKG on CX in 2004 Feb (and on to SIN) and service was excellent. In 2003 made 2 trips SFO - HKG - KUL and return. Very young FAs, enthusiastic and attentive. Food was great as well (I had pre-ordered special meals). Only issue can be communicating with FAs, since their English may be heavily accented. FAs are usually from different countries and wear their flag (at least used to wear then).

The A340-600 has gone to flying between HKG and JFK nonstop now. So your flight will most likely be the 744 or A340-300 sometime in the year. Seat pitch on CX aircrafts are the same as on SQ, and regular UA flights. ie tight.
You may request for the emergency exits but these seats, though with great legroom will be very tight around the hips.
Cabin crew are great. And drinks (booze and the like) are complimentary. Nothing too difficult to ask for on Cathay Pacific. Are you getting miles for this flight? You can always join Asiamiles or Alaska's MVP because AA's AAdvantage will onoy let you earn miles if your ticket is booked on H, B and Y class whereas it's most classes with the former 2.

Your flight will be a 744. The A340 has not been into San Francisco in a long time. Loads are very good.
I flew CX SFO-HKG 4 years ago on the A340. Fantastic service! Meals were pretty good. Service was friendly and attentive. Try to stay awake all day, cause its a loooong flight. Still the longest flight I have done.

Might not be directly related to the topic but unreleased sources have said that CX will add an additional daily flight to SFO next year. Was planned at the end of this year but obviously there was a glitch or something and now the flight will be launched next year.

Thanks for all the replies. Can anyone confirm that that each seat on their 744's have PTV's and games?

9V-SPK......that has been the rumor for a while. Any idea the start date? or type?
my guess is a mid-day A340...around 1 or so when UA's flight leaves
