I have heard rumours that a new airline will start operations between Dubai and Paramaribo in Surinam. Also the same airline will have some flight within Africa too.The name is to be PIAS. Has anyone heard something about this? What is PIAS standing for and what type of aircraft will be used? Apparenlty the airline will be financed by Saudi companies.
I ve heard this from a friend in Surinam who read it in newspapers.
Thanks for all replyes.

It sounds far-fetched in the extreme. I can't imagine that there is more than the absolute minimum demand for travel between those places.

What kind of traffic would they be looking at? Would they use 5th freedom rights with a European or African city?

This sounds too weird to be true to say the least. There's absolutely no traffic between Dubai and Surinam, so it's probably not more than another false rumour. It's common to hear of these so-called start up airlines, who don't excist and probably never will. It appears just another rumour like the one of that airline which planned scheduled service between New Orleans, Curaçao and Belgium using a 747 (Northeast Caribbean was the name?). These type of "airlines" always have odd city pairs they want to fly.

Thus far the Amsterdam-Paramaribo route has only been served for mostly local passangers visiting families in both Suriname and Holland.
KLM has a few inbound passangers from PVG, HKG and PEK. Incidentally there will be a few passengers (1 or 2) with connections from the UK or GVA, but that's it, it's minimal!

However, there are a few locals in Suriname who head down to the Middle East during the Haj, so maybe they are looking for a direct flight from PBM to DXB and on to JED or something?
