2 Questions About ISP

How come The new terminal wasn't built on the North side of ISP? I know that was the plan so it would be closer to the LIRR.

And what ever happened to the plans for making a parking garage at ISP??

Much of the land to the immediate north of the airport is occupied by the Town of Islip's recycling facilities. There simply might not have been enough space for the new terminal.
In any event, a new northside terminal probably would still require a van or bus shuttle to serve the LIRR Ronkonkoma station. It would be separated from the station by a very busy, high-speed roadway and the station's huge parking lots, not to mention the terminal's own parking lots and/or access roads. Definitely not a walking-distance situation.

I can't begin to imagine how and where a light rail line could be run from the present terminal. Even with a new north side terminal, the line would have to be elevated over Railroad Avenue and the station parking lots.* Awfully expensive, especially considering that the current shuttle van arrangement seems to work okay.
* = the loss of any significant number of parking spaces would produce a mighty hue and cry from LIRR commuters, who already find the huge lots filled by 7:00 am.

I haven't heard anything about the parking garage. One would come in handy, too, as it can be a long walk from parts of the current short-term lot to the terminal. There's a shuttle from long-term parking, but not from short-term.

Very interesting you bring this up. The plans for the new existing Southwest terminal and a north terminal have nothing to do with one and other. There we're plans for a north terminal, which would have occupied the recycling facilities land. The plan for a north terminal is over ten years old and there were political issues between Islip and Brookhaven town that doomed the project. The train station sits on both Islip and Brookhaven town land and there were issues concerning access roads, people movers from the station to the terminal, parking at the train station (which is an issue on its own), and in the end how revenue would be shared between the two townships. Islip felt revenue was there's to keep but Brookhaven felt it should be shared if passengers were going to access the airport from Brookhaven land, i.e. the Ronkonkoma train station.

It truly was sin the project failed. A combination of the nations largest commuter rail system and a well equipped regional airport only an hour from NYC would have been a huge economic boom for region. Even now people from NYC travel via the LIRR to ISP to fly Southwest. I was lucky enough to see plans for the north terminal and the coolest feature was the people movers from the station to the airport. The system was similar to the people movers found at TPA, MCO, and LAS.

As is stands now the new terminal, the plans for old terminal, and the newer part of the old terminal should make ISP a world-class regional airport. There are no plans for a parking garage, however construction is underway for a 2000 space parking lot that is being built to the right of the new terminal.

It would have been great for us spotters if there was a parking garage. I love the inside of the new terminal. Its gorgeous. It's just what ISP needed. Now hopefully there will be an expansion of service going both in and out of ISP.

Another Interesting aspect of ISP is that there was so much commercial traffic at ISP, but now theres so little. I recently did an Archive search on this website and used the word Islip. A post came up with someone asking about what airlines have served ISP in the past. There were many responses, giving me much info on all of the airlines, and destinations. There was much jet service.
