Temasek = Singapore governement organization

They own 57% of SQ

They are said to have picked up much of the stock BA sold

Singapore Changi has a strategic position inbetween UK and Australia.

Europe - Australia LR aircraft bypassing Singapore can be seen as a long term thread to them.

Are they trying to buy in ?

rumours. the tranche was split and bought by several parties, none of them obviously Temasek affiliated.

Seems Temasek may have got about 5% - they are already 19% shareholders in QF Singapore based LCC Jetstar Asia.

i would not read too much into Temasek buying BA´s stake of QF. although this inevitably invites rumors, lots of rumors, in regards to QF, SQ and NZ, reshaping the Australasian airline industry and so forth, Temasek has even teamed up with QF to form Jetstar Asia, which is going to battle it out with SQ´s LCC unit. then again, Temasek owns another stake in a second Singapore-based LCC, so they´re involved in at least four rivaling airlines.

but still, it can mean nothing and anything at the same time, it´s for sure an interesting move.

Qantas Airways will probably begin flying to Beijing within a year as part of its expansion into Asia, the Australian flag-carrier’s chief executive, Geoff Dixon, said today.

When British Airways sold its 18.25% stake in Qantas last week, Dixon said Qantas would be free to expand its Asia-Pacific presence, and to take part in any future consolidation among the region’s airlines.

"and to take part in any future consolidation among the region’s airlines"

any consolidation within Oneworld I presume, mr Dixon ?!

I smell something..

Qantas stake went 70% to domestic institutions and 30% to international, in the end Temasek ended up with approximately 1% stake in Qantas, which beggars the question, why even bother??!!

With 1% they got their foot in the door. It will now be easier for Temasek to gain more shares.

Bill142: how exactly will owning 1% make it easier for Temasek to gain more shares?

*shrug* I have no idea... they have their foot in the door and maybe able to take advantage of it. I'm not sure how, as I'm not too sure on the rules regarding their ownership. It may not be easier for them to get more shares. It was a false comment on my behalf.
