Varig flights to China were initially scheduled to start now in the second semester. However, I haven't seen anything about it yet.

Does anybody have any information about the status of these flights?

There is no hope for a flight GRU-MUC-PEK anymore. Probably we will see GRU-MUC-ICN in the next months.

So China is a no go for RG? Now its Korea?
When is AR going to start its flights to China, they were also expected to start up service kind of soon.

i'm glad, but why? is it difficult getting 5th freedom rights from Europe to Asia?

ICN is probably a much better bet for RG. are the germans/chinese/koreans putting restrictions on number of passengers between MUC and Asia?

DABVF

Why there is no hope to this flight anymore? As AF022 said is that related to the right for flying from Europe to Asia?

Cheers,

I wouldn't be surprised that TAP joining Start Aliance may have something to do with this change of plans. Lisbon would be a great stopping point between Brazil and China and since TAP has absolutely no plans to fly to China, Varig would have absolutely no competition and would be able to take TAP's feeder traffic from different Brazilian cities. Wouldn't that be something?  Big thumbs up

Airbazar,

I haven't thought about it before, but it seems to be a very good option.

However, do you think TAP would be able to generate some traffic to Asia?

Well, I don't know, that was just a wild guess. With the previously planned flight, it's a 2 stop flight from anywhere other than Sao Paulo. For example: FOR-GRU-MUC-PEK. And it sucks that you have to go backwads from FOR to GRU.

If instead you combine a GRU-LIS-PEK with a FOR-LIS flight, passengers from FOR could do FOR-LIS-PEK and save themselves a lot of time. Like I said, it's just a crazy thought  Smile

its possible...

all TP flights from South America to LIS - except SSA - arrive between 0600 and 0810, and RG's flight would probably leave GRU at night, arrive LIS (if it is LIS) early AM, and then off to Asia 0900-1030.

the way back the flights are a bit over the place, with LISGRU leaving at 0945, LISGIG at 1000, and the flights to the Northeast 1500-1615. It will be harder to make this work, because the ICN or PEK or PVGGRU flight should connect with SCL, EZE.

BUT chances are it will not be LIS...

I did not understant why a flight to MUC would have to stop in FOR.  Confused

FOR is a turistic destination and the number of people going to China from Fortaleza would be almost zero. Am I wrong?

This flight, if it even happens, is focused on business and Chinese people living in São Paulo.

Hugs,

Flying to ICN instead of PEK or PVG does not make any sense. Varig has stated that it wanted to expland to China because China is an important partner of Brazil's in many areas. There is huge demand. ICN should be based on other thought. The signal is clear enough earlier this year that Varig will fly to PEK then PVG in the near future.

Any RG flight to asia via Europe would fit perfect for many South America... almost directly to China without US Visa requirement...

And Chepos: as discussed in other thread, AR plans to Asia, as most of their plans, must be seen before you believe. Marsans is majoring in doing announcements and later forget.

RG to Asia
AR to Asia
AR in Chile
LA in Argentina

... this must be "the year of South American announcements that don't get real"

actually i think ICN is a better bet than China. large Korean population in Sao Paulo - less risky - strong industry in Seoul.

China a bit of a question mark - 'strong ties' yes, but riskier than ICN

EMB195ER, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I was just trying to make a point that if Varig were to route the flight from GRU to PEK via LIS instead of MUC, they could take advantage of all the feeder traffic from TAP, from all other regions in Brazil which could potentially save a lot of travel time for people traveling from/to a city other than Sao Paulo.

In addition, ?I have a feeling that it would be a lot easier to get 5th freedom rights between LIS and PEK, than MUC and PEK.

Talking about VARIG, who has flown with them recently and how is their service nowadays? I flew with them a very long time ago, in 1982, and had an excellent experience with this airline. Are they keeping up those high standards?

1982? Varig has been re-incarnated dozens of times since then.

1990s were terrible - service tanked.

I flew then a couple of years ago and seating was lousy in j/class, but FAs were nice. GRU is a HORRIBLE airport and kind of ruined the whole experience - it took me 3 hours to get out of customs. I would definitely pick a flight that arrived at a quiet time at GRU.

I've heard they are better now, but are there beds in j/class?
