BAe 146 To Be Used As Fire Bomber

It will be the first time the BAe 146-100 will be used as a fire bomber. Minden Air Corp in Minden, NV will receive one plane this weekend for testing. Minden Air Corp is located at MEV, the Minden/Tahoe Airport, located about 10 miles east of Lake Tahoe and 40 miles south of Reno (RNO).

I was surprised to read in the article the Forest Service will require all fire bombers to be turbin powered by 2008. That is one reason the BAe 146 is now being considered. I had not heard of that requirement previously.

It makes sense they would chose this aircraft. It appears there are plenty of them out there and available, and at a price of $2 million each according to the article, a steal. It seems there are plenty of ex-Aer Lingus and US Express Avros sitting at Mojave to offer a sufficient supply. They say the plane is a good candidate because it can fly twice as fast as the P2V which Minden Air Corp currently uses, but can still fly slow and take-off from short fields.

As well as Mojave, there are also Bae146's at Filton (6) and Exeter (7), and some more Ansett examples in Australia.

I do not know for sure how many are available in total.

I know AC Jazz is getting rid of all of their 146s  Crying So there are some more for conversion I guess. Haven't the Russians had turbofan/jet firebombers for years? But I guess none of them are certified in the States?

I was last at Exeter on 16 August and only saw 5 Azzurra + 1 BA + 1 Malmo.

Either the others have arrived since then, or I did not notice them.

Clearly anyone looking for spare BAE 146 has plenty to choose from

One of the Azzura's (RJ85) has indeed found a new owner, don't think the new owner is in the public domain yet so I am not at liberty to tell who it is.

The 146 being used has not being converted (yet) as it is only it is only being used for obtaining flight data for Loads and Fatigue calculations.

Avrorj... that's what I took from it also. Only that the airplane will undergo testing this weekend, not actual conversion. They did say in the article they hope to be using the aircraft for fire bombing next summer. I wish I were going to be here this weekend to see the airplane. I am at my parent's house now, near Minden airport, but I'm flying back to LAS today. Would be nice to see what type of paint job that test plane has on it... maybe a clue to who it's previous owner was.

A good way to make use of the the airliner nobody seems to want anymore. I for one wish the BAe/Avros were still in production...one of the most comfortable planes to travel in my opinion.

I can't see the FAA signing off on an STC without extensive engineering review (2-3 years min). Operating A/C outside their design envelope and the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program is extremely dangerous (think Fire Fighting C130).
Even if recips are outlawed by the Forestry Service (huh ??) there are plenty of specificly designed A/C for this role that are either Turbine or have conversions available (CL215/415T). Or even better the Erickson SkyCrane with the Fire Kit.

I can assure you that this is all being looked at by the manufacturer (BAE Systems), and they are taking in to account the operating profile of aerial tankers. They are using lessons learnt from previous conversions (ie the Hercules you mention) about fatigue life and the up gusts caused by the fire.

It is also still in the proposal stage at this date, nothing in concrete.

That may have been his experience, but I've never had any sense of illness. I have many allergies and react strongly to most. Never has any trip on a BAe 146 affected me healthwise.
