I need info on which airports lost scheduled passenger jet services, what airline, what type of jet aircraft, the years or decade of jet operation and the routing. Flight numbers and schedules if available will be appreciated.

Thanks a million for posting.

As a start, I believe DL DC9-10 served Paducah, KY in 1970---can someone confirm?

Dutch Harbor also lost AS 73M recently!

I think other cities and towns like Sheridan, WY; Flin Flon, MB; Yarmouth, NS;
Pueblo, CO; Cheyenne, WY; Parkersburg, WV; Utica, NY; Tripoli (Lebanon);
Naples, FL; West End (Bahamas);

also Rock Sound (South Eleuthera Airport), PA 707 used to fly daily JFK-Nassau-RockSound

also I believe there was a Caravelle jet flying twice daily between Noumea and Iles de Pines, I forgot if it was Air Caledonia?

Air Europa in Spain used to have scheduled services from Salamanca to Tenerife and Palma de Mallorca, operating 737-300´s, at least up till 2000. Now it´s just a sporadic charter.

And Melilla had a jet service with PauknAir BAe 146´s until one of the two planes crashed and the airline ceased operations. Maybe one of my fellow Españoles can give more info on this? (They´re probably all sleeping now...)

You're asking about the whole world? Lotsa luck.

I'd say if you get a United timetable from before 1978 you'd find 10? 20? 30? cities that had 737 service then and are props-only now. Or maybe some of them went props-only for years and then got RJs.

Bakersfield, CA (BFL):

Until deregulation in 1978, BFL was served by United and Hughes Airwest. The moment the act went into effect, they were gone faster than the starship Enterprise!!

Continental briefly flew BFL-LAS-IAH in the very early 1980's, but it didn't last but a couple of months.

Mainline jet service was re-introduced in September, 1984, when American began two flights a day. Routing: SBA-BFL-DFW, DFW-BFL-SBA-DFW, and DFW-BFL-SBA.

United returned a bit later with SFO-BFL. Their scheduling and routing was as stable as Squeaky Fromme...sometimes non-stop, sometimes via FAT, sometimes via SBA. At one point, BFL had a one-stop to DEN via FAT going, but via SBA in return. Later, a plane was routed DEN-BFL-FAT-SFO.

Continental returned after taking over Frontier with two flights to DEN in 1987. They outlasted United's DEN service, but eventually pulled out. Then United gave all flights over to United Express...

Then American reduced BFL-DFW to one jet a day...then seasonal service...then they were gone. Then so was American Eagle. For a brief time in the late 1990's, BFL had only United Express to SFO and LAX.

America West has been enormously successful in BFL, starting first with DH-8's, but quickly found a market for RJ's, slowly easing them in, to a full set of flights today. Continental's ERJ service to IAH has been quite successful. I doubt any mainline jet flights will ever return to BFL, but the RJ's have allowed for flights to return.

I thought that Essential Air Service prevented airports from being left in the dust by airlines after deregulation.

Laughlin, NV (IFP) used to be served by Morris Air and Reno Air. Both are long gone. I think that some cheap, non sked charters still run out of there though.

Also, TriStar used to fly BAe 146's to Grand Canyon (GCN) during their brief life, ca. 1995-1996.

DBo861, Bakersfield is only 75 miles from the northernmost edge of Los Angeles. BUR is 103 miles driving distance, and LAX is 118 miles. I don't think the essential air services act applies at that distance.

Also, I think VIS for a while had an occasional 727 or 737 from United for a while...if anyone is still there, it's United Express, but I don't think there are any RJ's there at all - too close to FAT.

Worcester, MA had some RJs from Atlantic Southeast serving ATL, American Eagle serving ORD, and 727s from Pan Am III to SFB. Now all service, even USAirways Express, is gone. Bridgeport, CT had United Express with BAE146s serving ORD in the 80s, now all commercial service is gone from there, though for cargo FedEx serves BDR with Cessna Caravans from Wiggins.

OAJ lost jet service in March 1995.

US Airways Express is attempting to bring regional jet service to OAJ, possibly starting in December, but they're waiting for an FAA-mandated environmental impact study to be completed.

US Airways Express is the only carrier at OAJ, with 8 daily flights to CLT.

There are many

Look for example at the Western Airlines SLC route map in 1983-84... many were served with 727/737

and

The Wien Air Alaska route map from 1979-1980... there are many Alaskan communities that lost 737 service

Those are the ones that come to my mind living in this part of the world.... I am sure there are many simulular stories for the different parts of the USA....

I can think of a few here in Florida, TIX, VRB and OCF..all once served by EAstern Airlines in the early '70s. Sadly, these airports no longer have any commercial service, to speak of. Also, MTH had occassional jet service by Air Florida in the early '80s. And who could forget Piedmont F-28s at APF!? And how about some of those Northeast(yellowbird) New England routes with DC-9s!..HYA, EWB, ACK, MVY, PQI, RUT...late '60s, early '70s.

A couple I can think of:

Columbia, MO COU had scheduled DC-9 service to STL up 'til the TWA merger.

Wilmington, DE ILG had United service (727, I believe) during United's "Service to all 50 States" period.

New Haven, CT HVN had scheduled United 737 service to O'Hare up until around 1996. Comair has recently returned with CRJs to CVG, but there's no longer any mainline service there.

If you get a Hughes Airwest schedule from the '70s, you will see that they served a lot of cities with DC-9s. One that I know of for certain that has lost jet service is Twin Falls (TWF).

Also, HP served Hailey, ID (SUN) with 737s in the late '80s and early '90s (close to that time, anyway).

London, KY had Piedmont service until the late 70's/early 80's, not sure if it was jet though. London now has no commercial service.

HTS had both USAir and Piedmont jet service until their merger, US continued until '93 or '94 with Fokkers, now only props from US. The only other commercial at HTS is Delta Connection RJ service to CVG, 4x daily.
