RDU had at least 2 under one hour ground stops due to high winds today. Debris were on one of the runway, and several GA aircraft were damaged. One was earlier today ~2ish when I was there.. the other was this afternoon. The ATC was evacuated, with protocal being 76 mph. Guess it got a bit breezy in the Triangle.

I know that GSO got some diversions, but with their level of commercial service, that isn't too interesting. Did anywhere unusual take diversions?

There was roof damage to terminal A , some smaller a/c were blown thought a fence and ended on top of some cars and Express Jet had an RJ that had extensive gear damage as well as some structural damage from the torque on the airplane from wind..

Wow is right. I had a football game, but it was cancelled due to field conditions. When I got home I heard sky lights had been blown out of Terminal A which has some leaking. Also there was some damage done to Parking garage 3 ( closest to terminal A). Runway 23L/5R is now open but 23R/5L is still closed.

RDU took a lot of GSO diversions too from the Tornadoes/wind around lunch time.

I think that front that hit GSO at noon and RDU around 2 was the same front that hit the Charlotte area about 11, but I'm not sure if they had to close CLT for it. I know conditions were pretty miserable.

Anyone know what planes diverted to GSO today? I would have headed out if it was anything interesting...

The wind was whipping here this afternoon in Winston-Salem...I'm pretty happy that I'm not travelling this weekend (got the trip to LAX in between the two hurricanes).

It looks like UA 5460 (ZW 146 from ORD) went to GSO for a while. IIRC, y'all don't get scheduled 146s, so I suppose that qualifies as interesting.

On a side note (and perhaps in a bit of foreshadowing), the HP flight from PHX diverted to CLT.

RDU was closed at one point today because of a tornado that hit the field itself.

I am about 3 hours west of RDU and its been windy through some of the day. I went to go see Troy(they were showing it a theatre here on campus) around 7 pm and got out around 10 PM and the wind has been blowing hard since, the weather alert I got said that gust could be around 40 mps with sustained winds around 15 or 20 mph.

Yeah, RDU had a tornado on the field. They were closed for a short time, though, so I guess it wasn't anything terrible.

I was unaware that a CO ERJ had gear damage. Anyone know exactly what caused this? i.e. something blown into the gear?
I did see part of the walkway from terminal A to the CO-NW gates was damaged, and the glass shattered in front of the Independence Tkt counter. Otherwise, it seemed more like a microburst than a tornado. I landed just previous to it however, and experienced the most rough landing of my life. We had two very capable pilots flying that aircraft!

The only diversions we got were some US Airways, United and Delta regionals I think. Nothing of any note.

RDU got one of our FedEx heavies, a Tradewinds (I think) and a bunch of our US Air flights from the northeast.

I also flew in right before the tornado (Independence Air #1050) Nice ride! Was riding with some other Independence Air employees, I think FLYIBaby was one of them. Well, one of them commented after the captain came over about how it was bumpy ride, and said "Bumpy ride? It was more like a roller coaster!"

Were those GA planes over by the observation area? Hoping to get back down to RDU before it gets too cold.

Too bad I was on the other side of the plane today, and was running late getting to RDU. I did not check if the planes were cleaned up, were they? I didn't see much damage except the skylight damage, and some broken windows on the glass elevator windows.
Some cool pics when we were on approach, and landing..

cool pics.. you got the Cactus in! Pretty cool.. HP only comes in 3 times a day.. pretty cool..

LOL.. that bottom pics just makes me see how Terminal A needs to be renovated too! It looks so old in that picture..

The funny think is, I left the airport about 30 minutes before the tornado! Kudos for me! How did you enjoy RDU, Mike? What did you think of the airport?

ERJ170,
I left the airport at about the same time, thankfully... RDU is nice, but I do see the need for a renovation! The marble bathrooms are interesting, but the airport is very easy to get in and out of quickly. I think this was more of a microburst though, not a tornado. I did hear a F/A on one of my flights talking about the 'crazy bag handlers' watching the wall of cloud coming across the airfield and not realizing it was a '"tornado" until the last minute. 80MPH was the officially clocked wind speed! Enough to flip small planes over? I think it must have been higher! The airport is very nice though, and the parking garage nearest to Terminal A is great looking! Even though its scarred a bit right now  Big grin

The official wind speed was 96mph.. I heard it went across the airport.. across the GA planes.. across the roadway.. hopped on the terminal.. went across the runway.. and then whooshed out..

The supposed renovation to Terminal A is making it 4 stories.. a baggage floor, a ticketing floor, a gate floor, and an office/observation area floor.. with 40 gates.. pretty cool, huh?
