I just made Silver Medallion on Delta. When booking a ticket as a Silver, I think I now have the option of requesting an upgrade at booking and it will be cleared within the prescribed window prior to departure. My question relates to flights booked prior to me reaching medallion. Can I call Delta and request the upgrade now to see if it clears before I reach the airport for departure? Or do I have to wait until I get to the airport to request being put on the upgrade list?

not to mention the fact that they have been releasing very few upgrades that process in the window. I have been medallion for several years and since they started the new procedures I rarely get upgrades prior to arriving at the airport. When you check-in They'll let you know. It doesn't hurt to call in advance.

Call the SM silver dept directly ahead of time and put in for the upgrade. Within 24 hours of your departure time, they'll start filling the empty seats. Cleared first are Platnium, then Gold, then Silver. You might still be on stby when you get to the gate. If there's an empty seat just before boarding, you'll get it.

I'd call as soon as practical to ensure a good place in the upgrade queue. Waiting until the last minute at the airport..... some of the pre-released seats may already be gone to Silvers 24 hours ahead of time.

Once again, make sure you airport activate yourself either by kiosk or Agent, just because you are listed for an upgrade by the medallion desk dosent mean you are automatically activated day of departure!

Yes you can be put in the queue. However when you call DL they will have to take your Skymiles number out of your reservation and place it back in. That way it shows the Silver Medallion status. Make sure you do this for all reservations you made prior to becoming Silver as it will also affect your boarding placement.
Your price of ticket and medallion status determines when your window will open. For instance as a medallion traveling on a Y or B fare your window is always open however as a silver traveling on L, U, or T fare your window only opens 12 hours prior to departure time.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Do exactly as DeltaMIA said. Otheerwise, your boarding cards will not show you as a Silver Medallion when you preboard. And like everyone else said, go ahead and call. If you are not cleared by the time you reach the airport, tell the agent that you want to be placed on the upgrade list, or if checking in at the kiosk, just press the upgrade link. After you go through the upgrade process on the kiosk, it will then continue to check you in. When you arrive at the gate, just watch the upgrade list on the GIDS until you see your name clear. However, if you are number one on the list and there is a chance to clear, but you board, you will lose your spot on the list and it will go to the next person waiting for an upgrade.
