Airtran To Las Vegas

I was just checking ATL-LAS on FL and it looks like the loads are very strong on this route. This is the final route for Ryan dba Airtran, lasting until November. I'm wondering if this is because the 320s do carry more passengers than the 73Gs that are replacing them. I wonder if more frequency could be in the works for LAS from DFW and ATL.

A more likely reason would be that FL may not yet have enough 73Gs in operation to ultimately replace all the Ryan Int'l A320s; I think FL had as many as 4 wet-leased A320s from Ryan Int'l prior to their first 73G delivery .

Well that's what I meant. What I'm saying is that as they faze out the 320s LAS was the last city instead of LAX or SFO. Perhaps the 737 fits the demand for the other 2 citys better.

Based on info from my son "Groundstop", AirTran can't wait to get rid of Ryan. They were a complete failure. Next time they look to wet-lease, if they do, you can believe it'll be with Miami Air, which worked "like a clock."

Of the three western routes Ryan Int'l has operated for FL, ATL-LAS has been the highest load-wise. I flew on them back in April (See http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/42912/6/ for the trip report) and there was maybe 1 or 2 seats open on the a/c. And like it has been mentioned, Ryan International's wet-lease has been a bad deal for FL (and the engine cowling incident back in July wasn't good press fro FL either). Ryan's inflight staff leaves a lot to be desired (I've seen Waffle House waitresses with better attitudes), and they have those A320s at a smaller seat pitch than what FL has on their 717s. AirTran has been losing money on ATL-LAX because of Ryan Int'l; the costs of paying Ryan Int'l were more than what they were making on the flights (I'm assuming that ATL-SFO has been a similar type situation as well). I'm just glad that when I go back to Vegas next Spring, that if I do decide to fly on FL, it will be on the 737-700s.

I'm flying on FL ATL-LAS-ATL in early January. Will the 737-700's be on that route be then? Also, can anyone tell me how comfortable these planes are, ie seat pitch, width etc...thanks

BOSugaDL,

I think so. I don't know about the 737s, but AirTran's 717s only have 30 inches of pitch. The 737s also have leather seats.

I flew PHL-ATL-LAS on 8/23 via AirTran. The flight operated by Ryan Int' wasn't as bad as I was expecting, the crew was efficient and the seats and pitch were comfortable, I was much more comfortable on the 4 hr flight to Vegas than I was on the 1 hr and 30 min flight from PHL-ATL on FL's 717, the seat pitch was awful. Don't get me wrong, I really like AirTran, I just hope the 737's are a little more spacious. I see that AirTran will be using a 737 from PHL-ATL starting sometime in November, can't wait to hitch a ride on one! Oh yeah... the flight LAS was oversold, actually the flight from PHL-ATL was full as well.

If the flights are overselling on 150 seat aircraft, they will surely add a flight or two once they switch to the 132 seat 737. Does anyone know how DFW-LAS does load wise? Maybe with Deltas pull out of DFW, more frequency is warranted there.

I have heard the new seats on the 737s are the among the best out there.

By the way. How many 737s are in FL service right now? They are supposed to have 8 by year end.

There are currently 5 73Gs at AirTran. And they seat 137, not 132. I've been working DFW-LAS all month, and the loads have been high.

Just checked the timetables and Delta flys 2 md90s and one 737-800 on DFW-LAS daily. American is adding flights down there, but I would think a couple more 717 dailys would work well. The additional flights could connect with other inbounds to DFW.
