Hello. Last night (9/23) I landed at LAX and as I was taxing to my gate I saw a United A320 parked at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. I was surprised to discover this aircraft there because United has an international customs facility in Terminal 6 where most of its international flights come in to. I looked up on their website and it shows flight 978 from MEX-LAX with an arrival gate at TBIT. I searched other international arrivals for United (Guatemala, San Salvador, Sydney, Tokyo, London) and they all arrived at terminal 6.

I checked again today and the flight is scheduled to go in to that same gate again today and tomorrow. Why does this flight land there? Is it too expensive to keep the terminal 6 customs facility open for this one, afternoon, international arrival? Any thoughts/ideas/answers?

I saw a UA A320 parked at one of the Bradley Terminal gates back in August while our flight from HNL taxied into Gate 35 at LAX.

My assumption would be that since we had arrived at a rather busy hour at LAX, that all of International arrival gates (which seem to be isolated from the rest of the concourses at 6 and 7) were being utilized and that the TBIT was the next best alternative.

A much better alternative than a remote gate at the west end of the field.

Again, just my assumption.

Flight 978 arrives LAX after FIS facilities close at T-6/7. Thus passengers must clear at TBIT.

What time do they FIS facilities close in t-6/7. Looking at the UA timetable 978 arrives LAX at 8:21PM. Does UA not have any other Int'l arrivals scheduled around then?

Thanks SHUPirate1,
I didn't realize UA's international flights have been reduced to so few at LAX. It obviously makes sense to send 978 over to TBIT if the closest arrival before that is around 4.

COEWRNJ-Here's a better idea...why doesn't UA re-time the flight so that they can actually park that flight at their own international gates...if somebody could track down the typical schedule for that specific A-320 (the one that generally flies that route) that would be great...it appears that that A-320 comes in from SFO to MEX as UA 977 (leaves SFO at 11:15, gets into MEX at 5:36)
