Effects Of Deregulation

Has deregulation really helped or hurt this industry ?One reason the legacy airlines are failing is that low cost carriers have saturated the market with low fares that the majors can't match. Or is the airline market too saturated that nobody can make a decent profit?

helped or hurt the industry?

depends on which side of the fence you sit on.

if you are a customer in a small town, service is worse. if you are a customer in a big city, service is spectacular.

if you are an employee, it pretty much stinks.



Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

The total economic gains to society has proven deregulation to be the best scheme for everyone as a whole. Of course, there are winners and losers.

Well look at what De-regulation did. I would consider the negative aspects. I would see PanAm going out of business because of this, Canadian Airlines having to merge with the ever horrible Air Canada which flies so many 767's over the Pacific (too small!!!) I wish those goose design 744 were still here!!!

Ktachiya... and the funny part is that a lot of the Air Canada 767s flying the pacific routes are ex-Canadian, and i know for a fact Canadian flew YVR-HNL-SYD with the 767 before being merged with Air Canada... so dont complain about Air Canada flying them across the Pacific.

i have an OAG from 1970.. Trust me, small towns are FAR better connected to the world airline network than before. Small cities , like SGF, had dozens of flights that really didnt go anywhere.
