Hey, does anybody know how the reconstruction of 14-32 at BUF is going? Any details on the project would be cool. Thanks.

Looks like they have finished whatever stage they were on. Haven't seen the construction guys out there. However, I have seen them daily building up the approach end of Rwy 23 for that extension.

The good news is that 32 will have an ILS now...

It originally was supposed to be finished in August. It has to be opened soon (before winter). When I was there a couple weeks ago I saw the new approach lights and blast pad for 32....pretty cool. I was also impressed with the amount of dirt getting built up on the rwy 23 end. Looks like they'll build that thing out to the thruway.

Is BUF trying to get bigger Equipment or just trying to improve traffic management? I dont think that any commercial traffic would use 14-32 but correct me if Im wrong.

They are trying to improve the facilities. They lenghtened 14/32 and installed ILS on them. It is a good idea to be able for commercial traffic to use that runway for severe crosswinds that occur occassionally. Also they are planning a major repaving of 5/23 which would shut it down completely so they need 14/32 for commercial use.

Just to add to your post, they need to rehabilitate the main rwy 5-23 and add the FAA mandated 1,000 ft safety area. They will lengthen the 23 end to make up for rwy lost to the safety overrun area. In order to keep the airport running they are extending 14-32 and making it useful for commercial activity. 14-32 will be the sole runway for 4 or 5 months in 2005.
