Air Wales LCY-CWL Axed

I just tried to book a flight from LCY to CWL and was told that Air Wales have pulled out of the route- the last flight was operated last Friday.

Obviously it wasn't paying, but having said that, they did little to support it. They started off with a 3x daily service Mon- Fri and 1 service on Sat and Sun. The Saturday flight soon went and weekday frequencies reduced to 2 daily. Then frequencies were reduced even further so that flights only operated on Mon, Fri and Sun.

This is a real headache for me as the M4 is jammed on Fridays and Sundays.
Every time I took the flight it was practically full, and of course there is no mention on their website that they have pulled the route.

This is history repeating itself with Air Wales- they have already pulled out of BRU and LPL and are about to do so with SWS.

How long with the AMS- CWL service last, considering they are head to Head with a KLM jet service and have appalling frequencies and timings?

Soon they will start a CWL- LPL- ABZ service. I hope that they can get that and the CWL-NWI-DUB service to work. They have done well with PLH-CWL-NCL, so it looks like they have got what it takes on domestic despite pulling out of LCY!

I think that Air Wales has the potential to succeed, but they need to give routes time to grow, and hopefully expand international services out of CWL.

Definitely a shame. I was really hoping Air Wales could really make this route work. If its true that their loadfactors to LCY were high, then I guess yields were just not good enough to sustain it.

It seems they're finding it hard to make a decent profit on their servics. In the last couple of years they've put off flying on quite a few routes due to stiff competition (mostly by LCCs) and as for plans to start services to New York, well I guess that'll never happen.

Like Cambrian, I really think this carrier has the potential to grow, but its just a matter of being able to market their product better as well as expand into untapped/niche markets.

Horus, you are right- I am not sure that Air Wales has found its niche. It markets itself as a LCC- you buy food on board and it only offers point to point travel, but the prices are anything but low cost!

I think that there is the potential for Air Wales to market itself as a quality, national airline for Wales. I also think that its fleet of ATR's sometimes works against them in terms of the image of the airline.

They haven't grasped the fact that frequencies and timings are crucial to success, and thus spread themselves thinly across a plethora of poorly-served routes, and then complain when loads are bad.

If they can't make CWL-BRU work, then who can?!

Looks like they are launching services to ABZ and LPL from CWL..

Maybe LGW or LHR could work.. after all look at Air Southwest... they can fly BRS-LGW..

I am surprised that there is really no market for air services between these two capitals. Perhaps a LHR service offering onward connections would be more successful, but who would use those precious LHR slots for a flight to CWL?!

Shame on Air Wales, but they chop and change routes with some abandon! CWL has a bad name with airlines, hard to get to etc... But they are using the right aircraft on point to point flights. 49 squid one way to LCY isn't bad, but it won;t make millions! BRS-london will never happen or work for that matter, Exeter to london maybe, Plymouth yes, even Newquey will, but the M4 and M3 corridors and train netork provide too much for an airline to do the route - period!
