It seems like they maybe selling off their profitable operations to get some money. Remember, Zander did say Island Air was barely profitable, but still profitable. Cargo was what kept them profitable during the 1990s while the interisland pax market shrunk. Their contact service operations handle so many airlines, TZ, CI, UA, AC, CO, NA, OAI, KE, etc., and that's just at HNL. They also handle other airlines at LIH, OGG, and KOA.
I doubt that they are looking to replace the NGs. They are on long term leases and apparently fit well in their transpac ops.
