It's great to hear about Star flying to Beirut from Paris,a route that MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME/AF have been dominating for so long now.I hope Star will be offering some reasonable fares in comparison with MEA/AF,then the competition will definitely grow. All the best to this newcomer to BEY.

Cedarwings

Is there any figure about the number of travellers between BEY & CDG?
Some heavy equipment and good frequencies exist on this route,it must be really good.

Ron,

According to the civil aviation figures, the last year number of passengers on the Beirut-Paris-Beirut route is 323 000, (app. 885 passengers/day).

I'm not too happy about this. It will dilute the high yields that MEA and Air France experience on the route...

I agree with BA,

This can't be good for AF or MEA. This goes to show that there is extra capacity on this route, and that extra flights could have been possible each week.

The passengers will ultimately benefit from this as there will be three airlines flying this route, under two different options however. One being MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME/AF, and the other being Star Airlines now. This development will likely drive down prices if Star is able to offer lower fares.

The word that AF might start flying to DTW next year is good news for MEA, as it will bring in additional flow from the US through CDG. Lets hope that we see AF in Detroit soon!

BA,

MEA and AF share 323 000 passengers/year.

On the other hand, Star airlines with its 2 weekly flights will carry 24 000 passengers /year, which is only 7% of the total number of passengers.

I wouldn't consider a 7% decrease in MEA and AF share a big loss.

This what the open sky policy followed at Beirut International Airport is about.

Also you should remember that MEA/AF will increase capacity as well with the A321 flight being upgraded to A330 when MEA gets the 4th A330. I'm sure that Star will have some restrictions regarding the number of flights they operate on the route.

On the other hand, it is said that Star will not directly compete with MEA/AF but will be targetting those passengers who fly the route with other airlines (mostly European) via their hubs. Examples are Cyprus, Olympic, Malev and all others that offer cheaper alternatives to MEA/AF. This is what the Star CEO has said in his statement.

Onle last thing, MEA faces competetion on many routes but has performed beyond all expectations. So no worries.

Nice to see a new airline here in Beirut. They will be welcomed.

Regards.

seems big / expensive aircraft for this route

If they would do a daily with a narrow body they would get more high yield passeners..

Or is tourism coming back to Beirut, the old "Paris of the Middle East"?

OD720,

I'm sure that Star will have some restrictions regarding the number of flights they operate on the route.

They won't as long as Lebanon has an Open Skies policy.

Keesje,

Not at all. Air France flies a daily B777-200ER and MEA flies a daily A330-200 and a daily A321-200 (which will next year be upgraded to an A330-200).

The A330-200 is the perfect aircraft for the route.

If they would do a daily with a narrow body they would get more high yield passeners..

I agree that higher frequencies would make more sense for the traveler.

Or is tourism coming back to Beirut, the old "Paris of the Middle East"?

Tourism in Beirut will exceed the pre-Civil War levels this year. So yes, the Paris of the Middle East is back.

As OD720 mentioned,Star will most probably steal passengers from Eastern European carriers that offer fares as low as 50% than MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME/AF.It would be even more interesting to see MenaJet entering the market, though they would serve Orly if they are ever granted the approval to start regular scheduled flights out of BEY.A direct cheap flight between France & Lebanon is many people's fantasy!

Are you sure these 2 xWeekly flights will be operated by the A332, in winter ???

I doubt...The A320 is more likely to be used during the (very) low season.
4 hours in one of the 180 seats of Star's A320... I hope their fare will be REALLY cheap...  Big grin

Good news for Lebanon anyway... !
