In the 70's, Beirut used to be the prime tourist destination in the Middle East. Pan Am 747 used to stop there on its daily RTW flights. KLM 747 also stopped in BEY on its flights to Asia. I believe Japan JL 747 also stopped in BEY on its Silk Route to Europe. Can someone confirm on this? So is VIASA and AC. PK? AI?
I need info on all the transcontinental routes to Beirut in the 70s----what airline, aircraft and the routing. Thanks in advance for posting.

AirAmerica, I can provide you with MEA's routes once I go home and get my 1976 MEA timetable.
But I can tell you that Pan Am also operated to Beirut on PA 1 and PA 2 which went via Istanbul and continued to Tehran (for a period) then was switched around to Athens and Karachi...something like that also I need to go home and get my Pan Am timetable to confirm that one.

Nigeria Airways, Ghana Airways, VARIG and a list of other airlines all operated to Beirut at some point.
Ive just returned from a weekend trip to Beirut, first since 1995 and Ive been stunned with how much the city has returned to its former glory (to a large extent).
I will post my MEA trip report (Dammam-Beirut-Dammam) shortly!

JAL used to fly BEY in early 1970`s first by DC-8-50's and later by 747 two times a week.
I remember that SQ flew BEY-SIN for a short time with 707 in the late 1970 or in the beginning of 1980's.

This is a nice thread.
My dad flew PA2 long ago.
OD720,
MEA bought Lebanese International Airways (LIA) after Israeli commandoes destroyed its entire fleet in a surprise night attack on the airport in December 1968.
So my assumption is they bought the airline sometime early in 1969.
AirAmericaC46,
I can tell you that Beirut is coming back to its former glory days. It may not get all the airlines it had in the past (especially since a number of them are gone such as PanAm and Sabena), but it is really coming back.

I checked Wassim's homepage, it's really nice.
But i have one question, why did flights in the 60s and 70s use all this routing? it looked like an around-the-world flight! Seems nice! Look at this one for example:
PA1 San Francisco-Honolulu-Tokyo-HongKong-Bangkok-Rangoon-Calcutta-Karachi-Beirut-Istanbul-Frankfurt-London-New York
all this with a 707! Guess each destination had 1 or 2 passengers only!

'BWH, Pan Am indeed operated two round-the-world flights, one east (PA1) and one west (PA2). Pax could get on or off at any point, so you could fly Beirut to Calcutta, Tokyo to Karachi, London to Istanbul, you name it. Or buy a RTW ticket and get on and off when and wherever. "Nice" is right. A friend of mine was Cat Stevens' road manager and used it all the time. He said it also used to go to Saigon during the US bombing etc in the late 60s and early 70s.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz
