I'm surprised MAH4546 didn't see this one. Starting November 1st, American upgrades their DFW-JFK service from 3 flights a day with MD-80's to 4 flights a day with 757's. I was shocked to see this with all the cuts AA has been doing at JFK. I'm also surprised because this extra flight wasn't mentioned with the 70 new flights out of DFW. I heard about LGA, but not JFK.

Dam.......I always enjoy seeing their MD-80s at JFK.....Without this route, they will no longer operate at JFK (for AA).

I am surprised though.....Anybody know the reason for this?

It's not really true that AA's been making extensive cuts at JFK. The three flights they've axed (2x to LGB, 1X to PHX) were ones on which they couldn't compete with B6 or HP - indeed, as I noted elsewhere it seems as if the LGB flights were nothing more than a deliberate (and unsuccessful) attempt to make life difficult for B6. AA needs to do something to fill up its new terminal as it approaches completion. They also may see the upgraded DFW service as a move to compete with DL, which has recently increased its services to oher cities out of JFK.

AA hasn't really been making a huge amount of route cuts as stated above. There is a rumor floating around that AA will announce more international routes soon. Look for this announcement around the time DL vacates DFW completely and time for the new terminal at JFK to open fully. AA is a huge player at JFK with service to Europe and S. America. AA is doing better than most domestic carriers. Just my opinions.

A friend of mine who lives in Dallas said that B6 held an open house of some sort at DFW but wasn't sure what for. I'll try and find out more info, but figured i'd ask here.

Could this upgrade be because AA knows B6 is eyeing the JFK-DFW market and it might materialize sooner then later?

How is this an upgrade? AA is going from 3 MRTC MD-80's to 4 standard-coach 757's on this route...at least put, say, the 738 on this route, to keep MRTC on the route...

That's what I thought as soon as I read the post. Only on AA would going from a MD-80 to a 757 be considered a downgrade.

It may not be a comfort/service upgrade, but it is a seating upgrade.

DFW-JFK also goes from 3, to 4x daily. Thus a net loss of 2 flights only at JFK (PHX, LGB).

I noticed that one. It is definitley not an upgrade, just more seats. They are going from roomy M80s with comfortable seats to cramped 757s.

FA4B6- I was thinking it just might be a move to discourage B6, but I havn't heard about an open house here. With the airport board so giddy at the mere possibility of WN occuping some of those gates, I'd expect B6 to make some news down here as well...

I would like to know what the hell AA is doing at JFK.
They have a billion dollar terminal opening--they have to make these flights work one wayor another. So far since B6 showed up, AA has cut service to the following cities from JFK:
ALB
SYR*
ROC*
BUF*
CLE
Columbus
Worscter, Mass
BWI
IAD
MCO*
LGB*
PHX*

The * is a B6 route.

One billion dollars! THEY HAVE TO MAKE THIS WORK!

Just my two cents.

Most of the destinations you list were Eagle. American Eagle did cut back major on JFK flights. They also cut BDL, SNA, OAK, and PIT, among others.

While they have cut, you forget to mention what they have added. There has been YHZ, GCM, LRM, STI, PUJ, BRU, ZRH, and NRT, for example, and others. As you may notice, the focus is on international services.

Jfklganyc,

My CFI is a senior Capt and Check Airman at AA and flys to Europe and Hawaii for AA. He told me that AA is looking at more international destinations out of JFK as soon as their new terminal is up and running. Not sure if it will be increased flights to their current cities or new routes entirely. I think they might be making GLA and FCO full time routes with the success they have had with seasonal service. Also, look for ZRH to become a year round flight.

Like MAH4546 said, AA is looking to increase their international destinations rather than more domestic flights.

Just what I've been getting from my CFI and what I think.  Smile

Cheers,
AA777jr

AA's JFK-ZRH route is not profitable, and will only operate 5 days a week this winter. It is already a year-round operation, but AA will make a decision whether or not to keep the route next year.

NYCAAer,

sorry, I forgot that ZRH is year round now with AA.
GLA and FCO are the only seasonal cities that they are flying.

Based on what happened with my itinerary, I think they are routing people to DFW for transfer to other flights around the country. Seems odd, because if you look at their new terminal at JFK, it looks great, but what are they going to do with it?

With jetBlue and Song also at JFK they are probably having to rethink and perfect their JFK strategy. DFW has essentially no LCC presence.

Oh the joy in being an armchair airline CEO...
