It's good to see some use being made of JFK's Terminal 5, but I rather doubt this is what anyone had in mind:
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has shut down an art exhibition in Terminal 5 of Kennedy Airport after a raucous opening-night party on Friday that left broken glass on the floor, graffiti on the walls and further destruction in its wake, the agency said yesterday ... Vomit and broken glass were on the terminal's floor

This is really a shame--there are no winners here. The artists lose the opportunity to show their work, JetBlue loses the publicity (although presumably still gets a tax deduction, hehehe), and the general public loses a chance to see something that sounded really neat, in a beautiful and historic space. While I certainly can't blame the Port Authority for its decision, given the appalling nature of what happened, I still hope they can work something out to keep the exhibition open--if only for the selfish reason that I was looking forward to seeing it.

Absolutely dreadful; what a wasted opportunity to showcase the Saarinen's fantastic T5 and introduce the idealism and adventure of air travel in the 1960s to a younger audience. It appears as if Ms. Ward's (she's 27) show attracted the 'Animal House' crowd, rather than the NYC art scene types. After reading the NY Times article, I would have loved to have visited this exhibit with my friends. Unfortunately, I will no longer have the opportunity...

Sounds like a ridiculously overdone media story. I dont believe anything the media says. In other words "show me the pics"!!!
Can anybody confirm that this actually ended this way? Or was it more like a couple of beer bottles, a few cigarette butts, and a door that accidently broke when one of the caterers were wheeling out a cart of food? Grafitti on the walls? C'mon..I find that hard to believe.

Well considering T5 was already in a state of complete disarray, this is not that big a deal. Yes its disrespectful, but it will be all worthwhile when JBLU moves in there.

Tommy767,
What the hell are you talking about?!?!
I have walked by the TWA terminal many times in the past few months en route to JetBlue . . . it is kept in perfect condition. It was redone for a movie shoot last year (Catch me if you Can) and was restored to its original 1960s style.
JetBlue won't be moving into the terminal. They are building a new facility behind it.

It's terminal: Rowdies kill art exhibit at JFK
BY BILL HUTCHINSON
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
A new art exhibit meant to revive Kennedy Airport's landmark Terminal 5 has been shut down after a rowdy crowd trashed the place at the opening night party.
Disgusted Port Authority officials pulled the show's permit this week after finding a collage of vomit, broken glass and cigarette butts on the floors and graffiti on a wall.
"We couldn't allow those conditions to go on. This building means a lot to the airport community, it means a lot to New York," PA spokesman Pasquale DiFulco said yesterday.
DiFulco said Friday night's opening event got so out of hand that a security guard had to stop guests from spilling onto the airfield from a door that was kicked open.
"As a result the building is closed, which means the exhibit is closed," said DiFulco, adding that alcohol was also illegally being sold at the event.
The exhibit featuring the works of some of the world's hottest contemporary artists - including New Yorkers Tobias Wong and Ken Courtney - was to run until the end of January.
But DiFulco said the plug was pulled because of the lack of respect shown to architect Eero Saarinen's 42-year-old building that's shaped like a bird in flight.
"There were cigarette butts throughout the building, empty beer and liquor bottles, broken glass and perhaps what was most disturbing, vomit," DiFulco said.
The exhibit's curator, Rachel Ward, 29, said she sent a letter yesterday to the PA asking that the permit be reinstated.
"Along with the Port Authority we're shocked with the public's behavior on Friday evening," said Ward, who has a forte for organizing art exhibits in unconventional venues such as an ice cave in the Swiss Alps.
Ward said the opening-party crowd was bigger than expected, and the event was stopped an hour early when guests started to get out of hand.
She said she and a group of volunteers worked on the exhibit for a year, spending "several thousand dollars" to clean up the former TWA terminal, replace light bulbs and restore the old departures and arrivals board.
"I spent the past year on this without pay," said Ward, who spent the weekend cleaning up the mess. She said she has invited PA officials to tour the exhibit with her and hopefully give her a second chance.

i was supposed to go to this, and so excited to get into t5. but being stuck in milwaukee, my friend went without me. she said a group of kids kicked in a door in the basement, found some old key/supply rooms, took stuff, and some really intrepid explorers found a door that lead out onto the runway!!
Only one kid got caught, but a good number of folks made it onto the field... one friend said he saw passengers in the Jet Blue terminal FREAKING to see folks looping around and causing mayhem.
But everyone she knew there was TRASHED... too much free liquor (and it's true that one of the featured artists... who will remain nameless... stole a bunch of cases of champagne and started selling bottles to the crowd at anywhere from $5-$10 a pop), no security ( only saw one female security guard, and she was definitely overwhelmed), and no one was checking the guestlist.
It was bananas out there, but not in a good way at all... it sucks that a bunch of drunken/coked-out hipsters ruined a nice art exhibit that was helmed by a few extraordinary young artists...
but sounds about right for an art opening! also, there were objections by b6 to some of the art that was to be displayed for being too "graphic" which i totally am against.

These people should be totally ashamed of their acts! To disrespect this landmark really ticks me off. I remember T5 in it's glory days and their lack of regard for its history is a slap in the face for Saarinen's work, the history of TWA, and New York city. While I hope the permit is restored because I'd love to see T5 again if the crowd can't be controlled then it should remain closed until Jet Blue moves in.
