Cool mission.

Hopefully the players won't be stuck in coach seats...

I thought the coach NWA DC-10 seats were pretty nice, but maybe that's just me.

Um, aviationwiz, are you 7 feet tall? Are you 6'6"? Those NBA guys cannot deal with coach.
As far as the heat go, their 727 would not be able to fly to PVG, unless it stopped in Siberia and a few other places. It would take way too long. Why would the kings have to fly to ANC? Can't a DC-10-30 make SMF-PVG?

The Pistons have their own aircraft, a DC-9 refered to as Roundball-One.

Talk about the expense of flying in 3 DC-10's just for one game, wow.

Favre,

What chances do we have at IAH to be blessed by the new colored DC-10?

Is NW taking a few old retired DC-10s out for the flight and configuring them differently or will they suspend a route for a few days when the reconfig the a/c for the nba players and fly them over and then config the a/c back.

My brothers (who work for the NBA) are taking their own flight to China, but flying PVG-EWR on the way back with the charter flight. I guess they're stopping in ANC. I'll definitely be spotting at EWR to hope to see a DC 10 in new colors when I pick them up.

Guys:

It is the standard DC10 configuration 26C 247Y. The airplane will only be half full so each player will get at least 2 seats together. The service offerd is set by the NBA and is the standard World Business Class Service plus NBA upgrades.

In many ways, this may be the last hurrah for the DC-10 in NWA fleet. With the recent A332 deliveries, no doubt NWA has several extra DC-10 just sitting around. Why not fly them to Shanghai???

It is sort of intriguing that if you tell NWA "I want to take 500 people to Shanghai on special flights," front some $$ and NWA will make it happen.

Does anybody at NW have any clue as to the configuration that these flights will use?
I don't think that they will make a forward of center sit in a coach seat!

The three aircraft are all in standard configuration - 24 business and 247 coach seats. They will fly PVG-PEK after the exhibition games in Shanghai and then return to the USA - incidentally, the aircraft slated to fly back to SMF is planned to operate nonstop PEK-SMF and is then supposed to fly on to desert storage at Marana - this is aircraft 1237, which was the aircraft in the NWA/KLM colors a few years ago.

Last hurrah indeed.  Sad

My parents just rode in a NW DC-10 over the weekend from AMS -- said it was packed, the food was good, and the pressure equalization was brutal.

Does anyone know what day they are coming home? I'll have to check Flytecomm for the time and try to get out to SMF and get a shot of that one while I can.

What dates are the flights, and will they be coming back home on the same route (reverse)?

I've flown on 9V-SPK.
