Yesterday I was driving along Hwy 90 from Del Rio to San Antonio when I went through the town of Hondo (approx. 35 miles W of San Antonio, Texas). What appeared to be the tail of an L-1011 caught my eye, so I had to investigate. Sure enough, my suspicions were confirmed and indeed there was an L-1011 Tristar parked in an open hangar at Hondo Municipal Airport. I drove onto the tarmac (hey, the gate was wide open  Big grin ) and parked right next to this beautiful, newly painted aircraft. I wrote down the current registration number as C5-WAL ; couldn't find any pics of this reg in the database. However, crossreferencing this reg number with the serial number (193B-1066), I found this was originally a TWA bird.

The L-1011 was truly a great aircraft; too bad they're hard to come by these days....

Jhooper,

AH-HAH! Answers the question where this plane got painted then...There's a pic of this on skyliner-aviation.de but they quote the pic as being taken at DAL which is incorrect...I thought that the field it was actually at was New Iberia, LA as there's a lot of painting that gest done there.

As for the airplane itself, C5-WAL is the former Northeast L1011 3D-NEG which was in DAL for at least 7 months and was the star of the pilot episode of "LAX", being the Serb Air example shown.

If my wife wasn't due this week, I'd head out to Hondo!

I also favor the l1011 though i have never actually been on one (im from 1989) after most were pulled from production. the most recent time i have seen a l1011 was on lost when they broke it up and put it on the beach. the end of airplanes is truly unfortunate.

If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.

so is it still in the yellowbird NE colors with the fictitious "Serb Air" airline titles?

..were there any other airliners at Hondo?

A340spotter,

If you are referring to the L1011 that was(or is) parked at DAL for at least 3 years, then this aircraft at Hondo couldnt possibly be the same one. I wish I had looked at the tail number of the one in DAL last time I was there. It was parked over near the terminal that Legend used while operating. It belongs to some high profile Arab who had some work done there and decided not to pay the tab. And the storage costs continue to mount. Of course, I could be wrong!

Well I don't know how they painted an L-1011 in Hondo, Texas...? They barely have a hangar big enough to fit a narrow body.

Well, the tail was sticking out (that's how I noticed it from the highway). But the wings fit in just fine....

World Air Leasing Gambia [Gambia] will lease former Northeast Airlines L-1011-50 3D-NEG (msn 1066) from TriStar Capital. The aircraft will be operated by West African Link [Gambia] on scheduled and charter flights from Banjul. It has already been re-registered C5-WAL and is currently being repainted and having its interior modified by Jet Center Aviation at Hondo, Texas. According to the airline, delivery will take place around September 25 and operations are set to commence on October 11. Additional L-1011s may be acquired. A homepage has been opened at www.flywal.com.

Hondo Tx... Great memories !!!!

For those who live in the San Antonio area or those who will be visiting Hondo and this great Tristar, make sure to arrive at lunch time and pay a visit to the Flightline Cafe at the airfield. It serves the best food in the area (for the student pilots or those flying for pleasure it is truly MUST for the 100-Dollar-burger).

Jhooper: That is a great looking bird; thanx for sharing the pic. I will be visiting the SAT area in early November; will rent a plane and go to HDO to see it!!!

No guarantee it'll still be there, but best of luck at catching it before it leaves. As for Hondo, the airport appeared completely abandoned when I was out there Fri afternoon. Anyone know when the USAF quit doing flight screening out there?

I was out in Hondo back in 1998 on a business trip with my airline at the paint shop. At that time the USAF Flight School was on a 'Stand Down' due to issues with the training aircraft.. or so I was told. The Air Force was also doing early testing with the Drone Program and I saw some neat stuff there, be it from a great distance. I will say the food at the Flightline Cafe is WELL WORTH the trip. I was there 7 days, and I think I ate their everyday for lunch. Also, a few days before I arrived I missed seeing John Travolta out there checking out the paint shop for some paint work on his 707.

ATC Rick,

To follow up on your question, you're thinking of the L1011 VR-CGF which has long since departed...
This particular one (3D-NEG/C5-WAL) was up until last month, parked near the end of rwy 31R on the northeast side of the field in full Northeast colors.

EMBQA, the painting may have occured at DAL and the interior work done at HDO? Total guess...

Jeffrey

A340Spotter, could you or any other Texas spotters update us on the delivery date/route of C5-WAL?

btw were you able to get any shots when it was in full NEA colors? If you did that'll be a rare slide to have.

Sorry, I don't have any idea.....And to give credit where credit is due, that photo is linked here from http://www.flywal.com. I'm heading back to Del Rio within the hour so I'll at least be able to tell you if it's still there.

Yes I checked out their site and saw where you got it from. The network they say they'd like to operate is interesting and quite ambitious, even New York! I don't expect that'll ever happen, but at least the website with their logo, the Gambia flag etc give it a good first impression.

Thanks again I'll appreciate any info. You might run into someone that knows where it's heading. Last time when it was painted in NEA colors it went through FLL on it's way to Dallas. There is a chance it could stop in FLL again on its way back to Africa.

The plane is ex-Northeast Bolivian Airlines, owned by the Flightstar Group of Miami, FL. It will enter service with West African Link of The Gambia. It is under going fresh paint and some maintenance modifications/updates at Hondo. This is the airplane that also appeared in "LAX" as "Serb Air." The same photo was submitted to the database last week from the photopgrapher, not certain if it was accepted.

It's still there as of today (11 OCT 04). I drove by at about 5:30pm. Perhaps someone with FBOWEB or a similar program could program in an alert for flight plans filed at Hondo and would get some advance notice of where it's headed.

Jhooper:

Thanks once again for the info. The thing is (at least what I've heard) those flight trackers don't usually list small/unknown airlines that aren't in their database yet.

regards

If you happened to know the ATC callsign, you should be able to track anything (except military and "blocked" callsigns) I used to subscribe to fboweb, and you could have it send you an email alert whenever an outbound or inbound flight plan was filed to a certain airport.

how does a widebody land at HDO? airnav says runway limit for double tandem is 90000 lbs only, that's probably way, way below the OEW for a L1011.
