NW At Terminal 3 At LAX

I moved to the Los Angeles area in 1988, and for several years, NW used gates 37-39 in Terminal 3 at LAX as overflow gates. I haven't seen this happen since PA ceased operations (A sad day). How did NW come upon the Terminal 3 gates? Did RC operate out of Terminal 3 in its last days? I remember them being in Terminal 6.

Thanks in advance!

I believe it was because when we had ,LAX-SYD, NRT, ITM, TPE, and multiple LAX-HNL flights we had during certain days of the week. With more widebodies using the gates at T2, the narrowbodies, A320's, 727's and MD80's were probably using those gates since Pan Am wasn't using them.

TW should have still been big at T3 then and AS was much smaller, so considering that LAX does a lot of common use at T3, NW probably asked for overflow, considering that they and PA would have filled up T2 at times while WN, PS/UA and HP would keep T1 busy

I think you mean PS/US.... just to clarify.

Woops. Sorry about that one. UA has been in the same place for 937 years at LAX T7 (with international arrivals at T6 and the T8 wing on T7)

More than overflow... I remember flying into and out of T3 on regular LAX-MSP flights back in 1997. IIRC, T2 was undergoing renovation, and NW was temporarily sent packing to the antiquated Terminal 3.

As to how they acquired those gates... no idea.

Republic did indeed operate out of Satellite 6 (Terminal 6) up to the merger with Northwest. The Republic aircraft acquired by NW, had their tails painted red, had 'Northwest' decals placed over their 'Republic' titles and began operating along with their new step siblings out of Terminal 2.

Northwest Orient used to operate out of Satellite 4 (along with AA) before moving to Satellite 2 in the mid 80's (I'm thinking it was around 1984 when the Olympics came to town and LAX had finished it's expansion) and much of the International Carriers had already moved to the newly opened Tom Bradley International Terminal. Satellite 2 was home to many International carriers (along with Pan American, National, etc) from 1961 to 1984. The original Satellite 2 was demolished around 1986 and the new Terminal 2 was built in it's place. Some International Carriers such as (AC, CA, NZ, 6A, KL & VS) use Terminal 2 today since there is a customs & immigration facility there.

It was such a strange sight back then to see Western aircraft having their tails and 'W's painted out to sport 'Delta' stickers. PSA having their registrations changed to include 'US' and their familiar PSA lettering replaced by USAir stickers, and AirCal having their logos replaced by American.

Thanks for the info!
It's nice to remember all these great regional carriers!
I remembered that EA (an airline whose staff kept trying hard against lots of odds and had an excellent product) operated in Terminal 3 before joining CO at the enlarged Terminal 6 in the 80s. I searched EA photos at LAX, and it looks like they had those terminal 3 gates that NW has used.
Thanks again, and safe travels!
