Hi all,

Just wanted to know, which of the 3 big airlines in China has the best:

1. In flight service
2. Safety record
3. Domestic network coverage
4. International network coverage
5. Fleet (in terms of fleet type, age, interior, etc)
6. Economy Class
7. Business Class

Reason I'm asking is because that they all seem pretty much the same, being run by the government. It really feels like that they are just one airline with 3 different names, no product differentiation, no competition between them etc... (And yes I know about the CAAC being divided up into several airlines back in the 90s but still... you'd think there's more "commercial" stuff going on in airlines of China... like fare wars, equipment (seat) upgrades, etc etc)

Thanks!

Jimmy

2. Safety record

In terms of number of fatalities in their core operation unit:
1) CA (1 fatal crash)
2) CZ (2 fatals)
3) MU (3 fatals)

...add the subsidiaries that have been recently folded into them, and the numbers climb

3. Domestic network coverage

CZ is the largest and has the most extensive domestic network

4. International network coverage

That's relative to where you're comin' from, but overall, it'd be CA

5. Fleet (in terms of fleet type, age, interior, etc)

Who cares, CZ doesn't pollute their fleet with A340s... so they win this one hands down  Laugh out loud

Well I have not flown these airlines, but from friends who travelled to China all the time...

1. In-flight Service - China Southern... CZ's meals and IFEs seem to be more advanced... IFEs at all classes in its fleet of Boeing 777s + meals are pretty good. For USA routes, it has a Businessfirst product, and a economy plus/premium service, and regular Y service. Air China is second, and I have heard much negative about China Eastern, especially on the regional flights. My friend who flew between HKG and Fuzhou used to fly MU due its thrice daily flights, but later changes to KA once daily and less convenient because the F/As at MU are so rude.

2. I think it is a rather unfair question because CZ is relatively young... but it seems that CA has the most accident rate, and CZ and MU are more than fine, especially they have the younger planes -- Airbus A340-600s and Boeing 777s, Airbus A319s & A320s.

3. Air China is leaning towards international. China Southern is more about Southern china flying and then China Eastern is about the eastern part of China. AC less domestic... but CZ based on Guangzhou and MU based on Shanghai... should have about the same domestic coverage... MU possibly better

4. Internationally -- CA should be top, followed by MU and then CZ... but CZ seems to be expanding more than CA and MU.

5. Fleet -- CA has a wide range of aircraft -- Both Airbus and Boeing; MU has mostly Airbus with a few MD-11s, and CZ are both Boeing 777s and Airbus A319/320... MU gets a bunch of new Airbus A340-600s recently, so I will say MU is younger than CZ.

6. Economy Class -- CZ scores the highest with IFE on its Boeing 777s. Everything should be similar and CZ seems to be friendlier group.

7. Business Class -- CZ again with its Premier Business Class... but all three Chinese airlines should have a variety of products... some better and some worst... very hard to judge.

Well the crash in Pusan is pretty well-known... Air China also has existed slightly longer than CZ and MU.

Not trying to be biased, but those questions are really personal preferences, and mine as follows (Order: Better, Alright, Relatively Poor [In Terms of the Overall Standard]):

1. Inflight Services: Air China, China Southern, China Eastern
2. Safety Record: Air China, China Southern, China Eastern
3. Domestic Network: China Southern, Air China, China Eastern
4. International Network: Air China, China Southern, China Eastern
5. Fleet: China Southern=Air China, China Eastern
6. Economy Class: Air China=China Southern, China Eastern
7. Business Class: China Southern, Air China, China Eastern
8. First Class: China Southern=Air China, China Eastern
9. FFP: China Southern, Air China=China Eastern

Best Regards.

Also 6 for its previous self -- CAAC... that makes it seven... The Air China is a major crash, and out of the 6 previous crashes, three of them are major with total lost and three of them are relatively minor incident.

Also MU accidents -- 1 is a real crash, and 1 is a midflight problem (slat accidentally activated) with 2 fatalities and no crash, and another is an incident, which it overran the runway and 3 fatalities.

And CZ -- 1 major crash with total lost of passengers, and 1 severe weather related crash land with 30+ death.

So I guess three of them are relatively safe with only one major crash each with total lost...

CA still top, followed by CZ and MU is the safest one...

Pretty safe for international standard... especially CA crashes occured mostly in the 70s and 80s.

There's definitely some differences from my own experience....
1) CA vs CZ 772 economy: CA 2-5-2 across, CZ 3-4-3. CA's seats somehow more supportive and cushier, whereas CZ's thin, hard, uncomfortable. CZ also seemed to have tighter seat width and pitch...Imagine doing LAX-CAN in CZ's economy for 14+ hrs...

2) fare-wars ALL the time. That's about the most significant competition among them...But of course you either read Chinese news or are in China to know. For example, for Oct 14 PEK-SHA, departure time between 8am and 9am:
MU5102 A300 RMB900 ($US 1.00 = RMB 8.2)
FM110 B757 RMB900
CA1501 B744 RMB1020
HU7605 B738 RMB730
MU5104 A300 RMB900

Lowest was RMB510 MU5122 departing 18:00. Non-discounted price for the route runs RMB1130, which is set, I believe, by CAAC but airlines themselves offer all kinds of discounts.

One thing amazing about flying Chinese airlines is you may fly in all kinds of widebodies even on domestic routes for a lot less money, such as 767, 777, 744, 343, 346. I even flew in a CA 747SP.
