Are Iberia's 747-200's Retired Yet?

Hello all,
Are IB's 747-200's retired yet?
Or are they still in service.
At least one is because its been sitting in the same place for 2 weeks.

3 B747-200's are still in service. EC-DIA, EC-DIB, and EC-HVD.

Thre are two that have been retired that are sitting at La Muñoza. They are EC-DNP and EC-IAF.

On the way out to the northern runway at Madrid yesterday one of them was parked infront of a maintenance hanger - did you mean that one? I have never seen one parked there before. It wasn't DIA as that was parked on a remote stand with the Areolinas Argentinas donde siempre...

The flights no. is IB 6841, or something like that....
IB does not operate the 744 to EZE!!

Very strange...but as Hardiwv stated...those dates the A340-600 is operating the MAD-EZE-MAD route. Where were you getting the message that said "Aircraft: Not in table" ? Maybe one of the websites has not updated their info? That is a possibility. In any case...enjoy your trip to Buenos Aires!

That's a pity... despite they're a little old, and can burn a lot of fuel, IB will close a very important stage with more than 30 years (from 1970, when IB did the first order to Boeing) By the way... The IB's B742 are, in average, a fleet with less flight hours than BA or other major airlines.

By the end of 2005 or early 2006 unless something changes, the remaining B747-200's will be retired. My personal favorite aircraft was EC-GAG ex. EC-BRQ "Calderon de la Barca". I had flown on that plane so many times I lost count. It was approaching 33 years in service when it was retired and scrapped. I would have hoped IB would keep it on display or something...it was sad to see the plane scrapped.

Currently you can see the 747-200's on the MAD-JFK , MAD-MIA, and occasionally the MAD-SDQ / MAD-SJU route.

Flew one MAD-JFK in first class (an upgrade) about 2 weeks ago. Upper deck, only 8 seats. Not great like sky suites, old style seats, but great service - 2 FA's just for us. The age of the aircraft shows in most things...

Right now there are a total of 11 weekly flights out of JFK. The daily IB6251/6250 is operated by either B742 or B743. The second flight IB6253/6252 operates currently on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. That flight is operated by A343.

Starting November 1st, the second flight IB6253/6252 will go to 6 times a week(everyday except Fridays), bringing the total weekly flights between MAD-JFK to 13 frequencies. At that point the 2nd flight will be operated by A343 and A346 on Tuesdays.

Finally from 27 December onwards, IB6251/6250 will change to a A346 and IB6253/6252 will maintain its aircraft schedule.

At this point Im not sure where the B747-200 will be flying to next summer. I think MEX will probably stick with the A340-300/600 especially in the summer with the MTOW restrictions that the 747-200 sometimes has at high altitudes. Also, given that the price of fuel keeps rising, I wouldnt be suprised to see the 200's retired beforehand.

In the end I chose IB over AC for reasons of convenience (imagine LHR-YYZ-EZE-SCL-YYZ-LHR!  Yawn). Although I've flown on IB not that long ago, it's been nearly 17 years since I took them from LHR to EZE and back. Look forward to the A340-600!  Smile

"Calderon de la Barca" has been scrapped? ¡Que lástima! I agree, it was a historic plane, which should have been preserved. I have a bad feeling AR's oldest surviving 747 is heading for a similarly unpleasant fate, and after just 23 years of service...

Wow...that would have been quite a trip. I mean technically with AC you only have one additional leg....but Im sure its a few more hours since you have to go west first then south. Hope you enjoy the A340-600...I have flown on it once and I must say that the seats in economy class are a lot more comfortable then the ones on the A340-300. Maybe if you are lucky you will get to fly on the 346 with the new Business/First configuration!!

Yes unfortunatly "Calderon de la Barca" was scrapped last year. I have some pictures at work...I'll try to host them on a site and post them on this thread, or I can e-mail them to you. It is so sad to see that plane in a bunch of pieces....I even have pics with the machine slicing the plane in half!!

Why has LV-MLO been retired so soon?? I remember being on that plane many times when I worked at JFK. Since we handled AR at that time, when I was supervising the ramp operations I was around many of the AR aircraft as well. Sad to see it in that state. :-(

The real killer with AC was a 5 hour stop-over in Toronto on the outbound, and a stop in SCL on the return coupled with a tight connection for London. Ultimately, IB is 16 hours each way compared to 24 on AC, and I've taken enough long flights these last 2 years...

This was the last photo I saw of "Calderón de la Barca". As you can see, it was taken less than a month after retirement, but from South America I couldn't follow it's fate, which as you clarified, was an ugly one.

No one's given me a straight answer as to LV-MLO's retirement either, that that AR still claim it is "aguardando su inspección" (sure!). She was built in late 1978 and joined AR in early 1979 as their 2nd 747, but with the arrival of the -SP in 1981, -MLO was leased to Flying Tigers from about 1983-90 where it flew charter flights for MAC (Military Airlift Command) in the US:

From 1990 onwards, once the -SP was returned, it stayed with AR, until that seemingly abrupt decision on October 25, 2002, to retire the aircraft, at the tender age of 23. Maybe its years in the US put an added stress on the airframe (I have no idea what it was made to do), or it accumulated more hours and cycles than would have been the case had it remained in Argentina. It could also have been related to the crisis (the 747 fleet suffered poor load factors throughout 2002). Either way, I'm sure -MLO could still be flying were it not so expensive to return her to service.

when Iberia puts the A340 it means the A340-300 when it is a A346 well it mean the A340-600.

If you fly IB to EZE you will most likley be on the A346.
