I'll take Air Pacific or QF any day. At least from when I was there we took a brand new (at the time) Air Pacific 738 NAN-MEL. Fantastic plane, service, and comfort. The return was on a QF 762. Service was nice, granted it was a red-eye. The QF plane was getting old, and I found the agents in MEL to be nop-notch. We were non-reving and had FJ tickets. They didn't have to let us on the QF flight, but did!
Doesn't Virgin Pacific now fly OZ to Figi?

Fiji is nice.
But you have to leave the main island and visit the small islands around. The main island itself doesn't have a lot of beautiful beaches you might expect from a south sea paradise. The main island itself is not that special in this way. You can have a similar experiance in the Caribic. The Atolls are what the South Pacific is famous where and makes it unique. So a sailing trip is the perfect way to visit the outlandish atoll islands, but thats also very expencive.
Security wasn't a problem for me, but Fiji is in general a poorer country and therefore not to western standards.
