Just Booked USAirways PHL-MUC

What would happen if USAirways folded before my flight left this summer. They told me they have to honor my reservation whether it be with another airline also I was told USAir folding by this summer would be unlikely. What do you think would happen?

Perhaps you should have asked before you booked... How can they honour your ticket if they dont exist? Next summer is eight months away... A very risky business.

If you are lucky another carrier will pick up your ticket on a space available basis. You should have booked the LH Codeshare on the same flight.

Let's assume the worst case scenario: US ceases operations. In all likelyhood, more than just Star Alliance airlines would jump on the opportunity to honor your PHL-MUC ticket. I recall when Vanguard ceased operations, US and a bunch of other majors jumped to honor Vanguard tickets, a.k.a flight coupons.

Please correct me if I'm wrong here. When we book airline tickets, our money goes to a central "pot" until a carrier collects the flight coupon at the gate, either by paper or electronically (e-ticket). Only then is the carrier "paid" from an accounting perspective.

This structure allows us to book and fly on all carriers, even financially troubled ones, with confidence. Nygfan84 your fine.

No airline "has to" except your ticket....May I suggest that you spend the couple of bucks and have a PAPER TICKET printed, that way IF US does go under, you have somthing in your hand that you could present to another carrier (I.E., another STAR Alliance carrier would be best).

No, the payment goes to the airline issuing the ticket. If the issuing airline has an interline agreement with another carrier, and another carrier accepts the ticket, then the issuing carrier has to pay the carrier on which the passenger actually travelled.

However, if an issuing carrier does not have an interline agreement with another carrier, then the issuing carrier has to endorse the ticket over to the carrier that the passenger will be travelling on.

In the case of a carrier ceasing operation (US), there is a federal law that other carriers must honor the ticket for a certain fee, and travel is standby.

HOWEVER, in the case of US, I agree that Star partners would honor the ticket regardless of the aforementioned law.

This sounds all too familiar, next summer I'm traveling PHL-VIE and then returning ZRH-PHL, I'm a UA Premier Exec that lives in Philly and was going to cash in MP miles for a biz class ticket; nearly every option presented to me was on US, and I just couldn't see risking it so I decided to go with the following in business instead, using miles:

Outbound:

PHL-IAD (UA)
IAD-AMS(UA)
AMS-VIE(OS)

Return:
ZRH-IAD (UA)
IAD-PHL (UA)

We'll see what happens, with any luck UA will still be around....

It is highly unlikely a SA partner or other carrier will honor your rewards ticket. In the case of TWA, many people here were forced to use their miles before the AA takeover. No telling how each 'fold' will go down, but I would have thought against booking a trans-atlantic flight that far out on US.

I know people who are making useless trips just to dump their US miles. I've got a friend from NJ who has come out here to see family dozens of times for no reason but to use up miles, JUST IN CASE.

If US go under and I really hope they don't,it is most unlikely any other carrier is going to want to pick up your 'free' mileage ticket.

Whilst I hope they survive,i've used some Dividend mileage to upgrade to Envoy in december,I must admit I was amazed how little mileage I needed for a round trip transatlantic upgrade,no wonder they are in trouble!

I have to be in Vienna by July 3 and I am returning from Amsterdam I am trying to procure business class seats through miles but not on USAirways. Can anyone help me? My date is flexible after August 5 on the return. Thanks

In the case of a carrier ceasing operation (US), there is a federal law that other carriers must honor the ticket for a certain fee, and travel is standby.


That provision of the law no longer exists. It was part of the legislation creating the ATSB immediately after 9/11, and contained a "sunset clause" that has since expired.

No U.S. carriers are required to honor the ticket of a defunct air carrier anymore. And since the carrier whose ticket stock your ticket is issued on actually holds and controls the funds, there is no "money" for another carrier to receive if they chose to accept it - meaning they WON'T, since they know they'd be hauling you for free.

So, if US folds - I hate to say it...but you're totally hosed, paper ticket or not.

Your only recourse would be to receive a refund via your credit card company IF that was the form of payment you used. If you paid by cash or check, you'd simply become another unsecured creditor on US Airways' list of people they owe if they shut down.

Heres what I came up with what's left EWR-DUS-VIE and on the return on United AMS-IAD on business. The only other alternative was flying LOT Polish airlines on the way back and I did not want to do that. I don't think thats too terrible my first preference would have been PHL-FRA-VIE and then AMS-FRA-PHL on Lufthansa but those Lufthansa seats out of Philadelphia are impossible to get as people know to book them ahead of time cause we know they will be flying. Lufthansa should have most flights as well to FRA and maybe one to MUC as well.
